    MORE NEXT YEAR
Portland, Nov. 5 J a c k s o n
county, for 1945-46 lax year,
budgeted $112,000 property tax
for aid to aged persons, unem
ployed relief, blind assistance
and aid to dependent children
This total amount was 31 per
cent more than was levied for
the same purposes for the 1942-
43 tax year.
Throughout Oregon 24 coun
ties this year levied more taxes
on property for the four wel
fare programs than in 1942-43;
eleven counties, budgeted less
Vthis year, a. decrease accounted
for by reduced cost of unem
ployment relief. One county,
Lane, has kept its budgeted wel
fare costs at the same figure for
four years.
Of the budgeted welfare prop
erty tax cost in Jackson county
for the current tax year, $85,000
was for aid to aged persons,
$5,000 for relief, $2,000 for the
blind, and $20,000 for dependent
children.
Jackson county budgeted this
year, as a property tax, 93 per
cent more for aid to aged in
1945-46 than it provided three
years ago; 84 per cent less for
relief of unemployed, due to the
state assuming a larger share
than in previous years of gen
eral relief costs, and its aid to
children was 100 per cent more
than three years ago, according
to a summary of welfare prop-
erty tax costs made by Oregon
r Business & Tax Research, Inc.
Property tax budgeted for aid
to aged, all counties, for 1945-46,
was $1,982,788, or 43.6 per cent
more than was levied by all
counties during 1942-43. The
amount of taxes to be raised for
unemployed relief dropped from
$721,912 for 1942-43, to $209,870
for 1945-46, a 71 per cent de
crease. Action of some counties in re
fusing to budget for welfare
purposes the amount requested
by the state welfare commission,
has raised a question whether
such requests must be met by
counties even though the
amount would prevent raising
tax funds believed to be neces
sary for other county purposes,
according to the taxpayer organ
ization's summary of the welfare
situation in Oregon.
