    GREEN BAY BOWS
BEFORE CHICAGO;
CARDINALS LOSE
New York, Nov. 5 (U.R)
The chips were down for the
defending champion Green Bay
Packers as they began drills
today for next Sunday's nation
al football league game with the
Cleveland Rams. A Packer
defeat virtually would assure a
new champion.
The Chicago Bears, losers in
their first five games, upset the
Packers with an irresistible
ground attack yesterday in the
second and third quarters to
score four touchdowns and a 28
to 24 victory.
Meanwhile Cleveland topped
the New York Giants, 21 to 17
and the Detroit Lions edged the
Boston Yanks, 10 to 9, to con
tinue in a tie at the top of the
western division. Green Bay
has won four and lost two.
In the eastern division the
Washington Redskins maintain
ed their lead by beating the
Chicago Cardinals, 24 to 21,
with a field goal in the last 30
seconds. Philadelphia stayed in
the. race with a 45 to 3 romp
over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

San Francisco, Nov. 5 (U.P)
Government officials said today
that more than 100 merchant
ships, hastily built for wartime
use, were being sent to marine
graveyards or would be other
wise disposed of as no longer
usable.
Officials of the war shipping
administration and ship opera
tors indicated that the war
built vessels would furnish no
solution to the' problems of high
point soldiers and sailors at Pa
cific embarkation points, who
have been flooding relatives with
protests at their slow shipment
home. The war-built vessels can
not be converted to troopships
officials said.
Departure Delay Seen
Many servicemen complained
that their departure for home
was being delayed while cargo
vessels returned to -mainland
ports with empty holds. Ship op
erators pointed out that bunking,
feeding and medical facilities
were lacking on most of the ves
sels. Illustrating the scope of mer
chant marine problem, war ship
ping administration officials said
that during the war the govern
ment spent approximately $8,-
225,000,000 to build 5,304 cargo
vessels, troop carriers and the
other vessels.
One of the worst postwar
snarls on the Pacific coast has
been in San Francisco bay where
shipping officials said 209 merch
ant vessels were anchored or
docked. The worst jam was six

facilities from Carquinez straits
to Redwood City.
While hearings were in pro
gress in Washington to determine
the basis on which some of the
ships will be sold to foreign na

up at nearby Suisun bay.
WSA officials said 90 vessels
already had been "pickled" and

men are preparing 110 more for
the graveyard.
The ships at Suisun bay are
mostly Liberty ships, built dur

To help carrier planes vault off flat tops in a hurry,
Standard scientists put special blending agents in our
famous Chevron Aviation Gasoline. Now, these same
fast-firing ingredients in Chevron Supreme whisk
your car into action the instant you touch the starter.
Gasoline must be vaporized before it can turn the
engine over. So, the easier gasoline vaporizes in a cold
motor, the quicker your car starts. The new controlled
volatility of Chevron Supreme not only starts your car
instantly, it cuts warm-up time down to seconds.
So, even when the mercury creeps down this winter,
you needn't worry about being stalled by a cold motor.
Chevron Supreme will get it going in a jiffy. Then, when
you sample that alert get-away, that pingless power
you'll see why motorists all over the West are switch
