Well, they've done it again. Southern Oregon basketball con
ference official! have voted In the annual tournament and, to make
matters worse, voted to continue with the Southern Oregon con
ference. Ashland, making ure they didn't offend any of the
other schools, declined to vote, Klamath Falls and Grants Pass
voted yes, and Medford voted an emphatic NO.
If the sehoqls want the conference, all well and flood but
we ean't see any seme in continuing with the tournament. And
If they want the iournament. why not dispose of the conference?
It seems silly is pley each other in league during the regular
season to find out which team is the best and then conduct a
tournament to determine which club goes to the state tournament.
Ot course, the schools that do
not exrject to have much of a
club have a decided advantage

in Dealer Showrooms
On October 26 the new Fords for 1946 went on
display in dealer showrooms the country over.
In city after city, town after town, dealcri re
ported that the crowds who came to view these
fin new automobiles equalled those who greeted
the Introduction of the famous Ford Model "A"
back In 1927 when showroom attendance
passed the 10 000,000 mark.
The opening day throngs were matched by
those who came Saturday and later. And their
opinion hat been unanimous. The words most
frequently heard have been "The Greatest Ford
Ever Built." They backed up their acclaim with
orders 326,840 on "V-8 Day," October 26

In the tourney for If they can't
whip the best team during the
regular schedule they get an
other crack at them In the play
off. That almost happened to
Medford last year at the Ashland
tournament. Carrying an unde
feated record into the playoff,
the Tornado had an off night
and met a fired-up Klamath Falls
gang and had to go Into an extra
period to eke out a three-piint
margin. And all after Medford
had whacked Klamath badly
four times. With all due respect
to our friends from over the hill,
it just wouldn't have been a fair
representation of southern Ore
gon basketball to send the Peli
cans to the tourney had they
won.
Some In favor of the tourna
ment will argue that if a team
is championship calibre they
should be able to go through
their conference schedule and
also through the playoff. We
don't feel that way, though.
Take maor league baseball
or even Coast league ball for
that matter the Detroit Tig

exceptions, teams are bound to
lose games once in a while and
still be the outstanding club.
There was one improvement
planned in the coming season,
however. Conference teams will
play each other but twice In-

We have been against holding
both the conference and tourna

old enough to know what was
going on and will continue to
be against it so long as such a
foolish plan is carried out. The

It's too late to do anything

Despite their lop-sided win
over Bend here Friday night,
the Black Tornado looked woe
fully weak on tackling at
times. It looks like the Med
ford squad has been reading
their own publicity and begin
ning to think they're good.
We'll have to admit they are
pretty classy football aggre
gation but from now on out
the games become tougher all
the time and, with another
state title within their grasp,
we'd hate to see them lose out
because of a lack of devotion
to the fundamentals.
A lot of credit is due the
plucky but badly outclassed
Bend team. They never once let
down and, even with the score
hopelessly against them, they
never once gave up trying to get
a touchdown.
It was really a treat to watch
Frank Basher work the Friday
night game. He's one of the
classiest referees ever brought In
here and Medford should feel
fortunate In being able to secure
his services.

NEW YEAR'S DAY
San Francisco, Nov. 5 U.R)
Coach Jimmy Phelan and his
Galloping Gaels were back in
the hills of Moraga today listen
ing to the New Year's day bowl
offers, but saying nothing of
what the future held in store.
Irish Jimmy, despite the 26-0
shellacking his team plastered
on the tottering Trojans from
USC Saturday, was taking noth
ing for granted.
His boys have what should be
a "breather" this week in Fresno
State but the Bulldogs are
known as one of the tougher
clubs of the minor schools and,
as usual, Phelan will be called
upon to use his first stringers
for at least half of the tilt.
To Ploy UCLA
The other game remaining on
the schedule is against an admit
tedly strong UCLA in the Los
Angeles coliseum on Nov. 17.
That is expected to be the key
game in deciding if the Gaels
stay undefeated and to which
bowl they may go.
Meanwhile, with a lucrative
New Year's day offering expect
ed from either the Sugar or
Orange Bowl officials in the
near future, the Gaels are ex
pected to turn down a request
that they play an early Decem
ber game In Honolulu, so that
Herman Wedemeyer, Charles
(Spike) Cordeiro and Harold Van
Giesen could go on display be
fore their home-town fans.
Only Unbeaten Team
The Gaels today are the ohly
undefeated and untied major
gridiron aggregation in the 'far
west. The Fleet City Bluejackets
in the same bracket until yes
terday, got caught with a 13-13
tie with the underdog Sti Mary's
Pre-Flight Alrdevils. It was a
great battle of AU-Americans,
with 60,000 fans filling Kezar
stadium in San Francisco.
At Marysvllle, the Camp Beale
Bears came from behind yester
day to defeat Albany Navy 24
to 7. Albany scored in the first
few minutes of play but the
Bears rolled the Navy back with
three touchdowns and two safeties.
