reason she has a cold is because

Night air Is generally better
for the baby or for any one else
than day air. It is clearer of
dust, cleaner, more refreshing,
less dried itiit and hence less
likely to be irritating to delicate
membranes lining the breathing
passages than day air is.
But if you had even attended
school, Ma'am I mean if the
school system had been enlight
ened you would have learned,
say in sixth grade, that a baby's
place is In the home not out on
tho street, attending the movies,
prayer meeting or cocktail par
ties, and especially Is this true
after dark.
I know It is Just terrible that
a young mother should be pin
ned down like that for a whole
year or more when she wants
to be out "having a good time."
A baby less than six months
old should be undressed, bathed,
powdered, given time for a little
play on the -blanket, dressed in
nighty, fed and tucked in bed by
8 to 8:30 p. m. every day. Zero
hour for a baby to be abed is
6 p. m, until the baby is
two years old. People who drag
babies out at night should be
warned for the first offense, pun
ished for the next offense. This1
leniency is fair because such peo
ple are not entirely to blame
for their Ignorance the board
of education ought to be cen
sured or penalized for failure to
provide elementary instruction
in the care of infants.
This "slight cold" your baby
has picked up at church or pray
er meeting, Ma'am, whatever it
nioy prove to be, was very likely
presented to the defenseless buby
by some generous soul who stop
ped to admire the baby and left
a sample of whatever he or she
happened to be coming down
with.
Every baby a year old must
have 14 or 13 hours of sleep
daily, in comfortable bed, not in
cart or a car or in any place
convenient for the careless moth
er or nurse to park the nuisance.
One or two hours of the 15 hours
of sleep may bo in a mid-day
nap. Unnecessary or unusual
noise should be avoided when
the baby is asleep, but the ordi
nary household activities and
sounds should not be hushed a
normal baby is not disturbed by
ordinary sounds, or lights. A nor
mal baby has no more fear of
the dark than you or I have.

The agriculture department to
day predicted a break ot 10 to
15 per cent in farm earnings
next year from the record high
levels of 1945.
In a forecast of farm income
In 1946, the department said that
overall earnings probably will
decline $2,200,000,000 and in
come after tnxes and expenses
by $1,950,000,000. Neverthe
less, farm income still will be
higher than pre-war levels.
With the drop in farm Income,
the department said, there prob
ably will be an increase In some
of the prices farmers must pay
next year.
The department predicted
"moderate" reductions In prices
received for meat and dairy
products, but sharper declines
In prices are poultry and eggs,
fruits and vegetables.
Farm wage rates, which have
almost tripled during the war,
are likely to stay high, the de
partment said.
The department said that over
all farm income this year prob
ably will reach the historic
height of $21,200,000,000, in
cluding $800,00,000 In govern
ment payments. Net income
probably will amount to $13,-
000,000,also a record.

(U.R) Foreign agents could plant
atomic time-bombs in this na
tion's major cities and military
bases during peacetime to de
stroy It in one big blow, accord
ing to the association of Cam
bridge scientists.
Advocating international con
trol of atomic energy, the newly
formed association predicted an
atomic war would be waged
with atom-mines smuggled into
a country rather than with air
borne atomic weapons.

"Atomic explosives are suf
ficiently compact to permit an
infernal machine to resemble a
grand piano, or a chest of draw-'
ers, or a sofa," said Dr. Louis
N. Ridenour, one of the many
nationally-known scientists
gathered here for radar develop
ment. "The mechanism of the bomb,
apart from the explosive mater
ial Itself can readily be con
structed within the country to
be mined, and assembled on the
spot," he said.
"The explosive would have to
be smuggled in, but this can be
done in many ways and in such
small individual lots that detec
tion Is escaped more than 90
per cent of the time."
Conclusions Reached
The aggressor nation even
might remain unidentified after
wiping out or crippling its
enemy, said others among the
more than 500 physicists, chem
ists and engineers joining the
association in urging world con
trol of atomic weapons and re
search. The association urged the
United States to lead In achiev
ing world cooperation for the
prevention of war.
It reached the conclusions:
1. Other nations will be able
to produce atomic bombs.
2. No effective defense is pos
sible In atomic warfare.
3. Safety cannot be obtained
by superiority In atomic arma
ment. 4. Future wars will mean the
destruction . of "a large frac
tion of civilization." '
5. International coopcra 1 1 o n

Navy Reopens V-5
Training Program
To Boys Under 20
The navy has opened flight
training to 19-year-old civilian
boys for the first time since the
war ended. The age limit pre
viously was 18.
Naval aviation cadet selection
board in Seattle said that civi
lian boys between the ages of 17
and 20 could Join class V-5 of
the naval reserve Immediately
if they were high school gradu
ates or would be graduated on
or before Feb. 25, 1946. They
will be on inactive duty until
March 1.
The minimum height limit was
raised to five feet, six inches.
Transportation to Seattle will
be furnished upon request of ap
plicants, the navy said.
