STRYCHNINE POISONING, LOCKJAW AND 'HYDROPHOBIA'

age of red sugar coated tablets
of strychinlne and ate some as
"candv." Presently the child
went Into convulsions, unfortun
ately. at the time, there was
a tremendous "mad dog" cam
paign on and the pragmatic
health department seized upon
the opportunity to stampede the
credulous public the health de
partment doctors (usually doc
tors who, for want of a practice
of their own, are glad to take a
job that assures them the means
of living), anxious to please the
politician in control, "pronounc
ed" the case "hydrophobia" not
just rabies, if you will notice,
but 'hydrophobia," which the
politicians prefer as being, in
their shrewd estimation, the
more frightful term started

but pointed out with regret that
it was 'too late," for the child
succumbed within 24 hours.
It was odd, that case of health
department "hydrophobia." Ac
cording to the child's parent the
child had been apparently per
fectly well up to the abrupt oc
currence of tlie first convulsion.
The parent knew of no wound,
scratch or bite by dog or animal
altho a puppy In the neighbor
hood often played with the chil
dren. There was nothing wrong
with the puppy and the parent
knew of no dog or other animal
in the neighborhood that was
vicious or behaving strangely.
The parent admitted that there
was a box of red sugar coated
tablets in a cupboard, left there
for a year or two, and the chil
dren could have found them.

The very abruptness of onset
of the spasms or convulsions, out
of a clear sky, strongly suggests
strychnine poisoning and weighs
almost as strongly against the
inference that the child has any
illness or disease.
If lockjaw (tetanus) occurs, fol
lowing some wound, puncture,
scratch or abrasion, there is us
ually if not always a premom
tory or Invasion stage, lasting a
few days, during which there is
vague "sore throat" or complaint
of some stiffness in the neck or
tightness in the jaw or Inability
to open the mouth as widely as
before and perhaps some diffi
culty In chewing and swallow
ing.
All of the somewhat stereo
typed textbook descriptions of
alleged rabies in man it is not
able that even Dr. Osier s Prac
tice of Medicine is no exception
are composite pictures, made
up from what this and that au
thor has said about it. However,
the textbooks all agree that there
is a premonitory stage lasting at
least several days, during which
the patient is irritable, sleepless,
apprehensive, depressed or mel
ancholy and, as Osier expresses
it, "has a constant sense of im
pending danger." No spasm or
convulsion in any description of
human rabies or 'hydrophobia"
until a later stage.
As for that "constant sense of
impending danger" no wonder
the victim of "hydrophobia" pho
bia is so scared. Isn't that what
the health department people
stage these periodic mad dog
scares for?

In Pennsylvania, the birth rate
