JUST BETWEEN
The trouble with a lot of neu
rotics persons who consider
themselves "nervous" or en
dowed with more sensitive
nerves or
nerv centers
r " - than ordinary
I folk or afflict
49t staSA ed with "weak
nerves or
"n er v ous ex
haustion" the
trouble is that
these Class A
neurotics had
rather go on
b e 1 1 e v i n K
t h 1 n gs which
Dr. Brady are not so than
learn the physiological truth.
And the trouble with the old
one-horse-and-buggy doctor who
says so Is that he says things1
like this in the fewest possible
words in order to save more
time to bowl Instead of burying
the thought In a lot of psycho
logical double talk as all of the
best authorities do.
Now will Class A neurotics
please pay close attention while
I make with the positive. Noth
ing imaginery or assumed about
it Class A neurotics really have
something the matter with one
or another organ or function, al
tho it is usually not the brain,
spinal cord or nerves that is af
fected more likely it is the
teeth, the arteries, the Kings or
the digestive organs. Chew that
over if you belong In Class A.
There's no telling you may get
a kick out of it, a kick back
toward recovery.
What I mean to imply Is that
any invalid, no matter what the
nature or cause of his illness or
poor health, is naturally more
irritable, cranky, peevish restless
and unstable than a healthy per
son. If the nature or cause of
the trouble is hidden or not
known it is easy to ascribe the
invalid's Impatience or oversen
sitiveness to "nerves," and that's
how so many invalids or near
invalids with hidden or undiag
nosed ailments achieve the de
plorable state of neuroticism. It
is as much their own fault as
it is the fault of the physicians
they consult if they consult
physicians.
In actual practice. Class A
neurotics should understand, pa
tients with lesions of the brain, j
spinai-cora or nerves are no
more "nervous" in the popular
sense of the term than are pa
tients with arthritis, peptic ul
cer or pulmonary tuberculosis.
Unfortunately this spurious
conception of "weak nerves" in
itself keeps many of Its victims
from consulting a physician in
the early or incipient stage of
their illness for instance pul
monary tuberculosis and thus
robs them of the best chance of
early recovery. I mention tuber
culosis merely for the sake of
emphasis not that it is likely
to be found in many instances
of what purports to be Just "ner
vous weakness."
Well, I hope what I say here
doesn't make anybody mad if it
does I'm sorry and I say: Oh,
pshaw. Still more I hope it
