Klamath Falls. In a game
which they had dubbed a "dress
rehearsal", lost 13-12 to Grants
Pass last week while Medford
was whipping a stubborn Eure
ka team, 38 to 0. Ashland was
idle.
Weather for the game should
be fair, for skies have cleared
after a brisk rain earlier this
week. The rains temporarily
delayed fruit harvest. Up to
that point fine fall weather had
aided in harvest of the record
crop, which has crowded every

plant in the district beyond
capacity.
Fall bird hunting season
brought the usual flood of com
plaints from farmers and other
landowners about careless hunt
ers. Birds nre reported not too
plentiful, this being attributed
to an exceedingly wet spring.
Fire Chief Elliott made his
annual check of schools last
week and reported that all
schools improved their previous
exacuation records.
Two large plate glass windows
were broken in the gas com
pany office on Main street Wed
nesday when Emll Britt of Jack
sonville lost control of his car
after a collision and crashed into
the company building.
Indicating the increased inter
est in horse raising being shown
in the valley. John Cupp recent
ly returned from a trip to Ten
nessee where he purchased 32

been swarded the air medal with
gold star for duty with a carrier
task force which saw duty in
the Japanese campaign. Gerety,
aviation gunner, was aboard the
USS Monterey off Tokyo at the
time of the award. Robert Hub
bard, lead navigator with a C47
transport group which has been
operating from a Philippine
base, has been made a first lieu
tenant. He has been overseas
about a year. George A. Cod
ding has been made a lieuten,
ant, Junior grade, on the USS
MacKcnzle and other promo
tions are those of Allen Buck
ingham to third grade techni
cian with an ordnance company
on Leyte and John W. Snider to
master sergeant at Camp Car
son, Colo.
A story about the USS LSM
40, of which Ensign Eugene
Hayes is commissary and ship's
service officer, states that the
LSM participated in. 10 invas
ions in a year of rugged cam
paigning. Still in the Philip
pines is Staff Sgt. Kenneth
Scripter who saw considerable
service with an anti-tank com
pany of the 129th infantry regi
ment of the 37th division. The
sergeant holds the combat in
fantryman's badge.
The Huson twins. Roy and
Ray, are both home again. Roy,
who spent many months in New
Guinea, was discharged in Aug
ust and his brother who was in
Hawaii. New Caledonia, the
Philippines and Okinawa, was
released only a fow days ago.
Also home are Dr. Charles L.
Coyle former captain in the
medical corps First Lt. Berniece
Gill ANC. bc-th of whom served
many months In Europe.
A visitor In Medford last
week was A' Gould, who spent
17 months of his four years of
army in a German prison camp.
The former first lieutenant in
the air corps plans to return to
the university to finish his jour
palism studies. Here, on ter
minal leave is Lt C. E. Cham
Perlain, who made two complete
trips around the world as a
transportation officer. Released
from service recently were Jack
Bentley, who served as a ser
geant in the air corps and was
in the army five years altogeth
er, and Harvey Maxson, who
spent 30 months In the European
theater and held the rating of
nechnician fourth grade with an
infantry regiment.
Owen Phelan, who spent 18
months on Attu, has been releas
ed from the Seabees and Wil
liam Gates, In the army five
vears and in the Pacific 23

Experiment Farms
In Columbia Basin
Coulee Dam, Wash. (U.R) Six
pre-developed fanns will be
established on the 1,000.000-ucre
Columbia Basin project in south
eastern Washington.
The farms will be designed to
demonstrate irrigation methods
and pave the way for more ef
ficient use of land. They will
be placed in representative areas
on various types of soil.
Children Sue For
Deprivation Of
Father's Care
Chicago. Oct. 19U.m The
U. S. circuit court of appeals to
day had under advisement a suit
brought by four children against
the "other woman." who alleg
edly broke up their home and
deprived them of their father's
care.
In what was believed to be
the first case of Its kind. Judge
Evan A. Evans indicated that
children of broken marriages
have the right to sue a third
party who come between their
parents.
The suit, seeking $100,000
damages, was brought by the
four school-aged children of Mrs.
Olive Means Dally, Oil City, Pa.
Barbara, Ellen, Mary and Wil
fred, Jr. '
Named as a deiendant was
Mrs. Marrian Lammers Parker,
42, Chicago, wealthy wife of a
naval officer.

town street.
The Schronces had not seen
each other since January when
he left Ft. Logan, Colo., to join
the 8th air force in England. 'At
the same itme, Mrs. Schronce
enlisted in the WAVES.

Bring Just to the boiling point in a large
saucepan
Vj cup milk
Remove from heat and add to milk In
the order given
A labletpoom shortening
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, well beaten
1 cake moist compressed yeast,
crumbled
Stir rapidly to blend all Ingredients.
Then add
2 cups sifted Sperry Drifted Snow

Beat until a smooth, thick batter is
formed. Cover pan with a damp cloth
and let rise in a warm place until double
in bulk, about 45 minutes. Then stir in
'A cup chopped, blanched almonds
(or other nuts)
Fill greased muffin pans 1A full. Let rise
till double in bulk, about 25-30 minutes.
Brush tops of gems with melted shorten
ing if desired. Bake In a hot oven 425
for 10-12 minutes. 15 medium size gems,
or 20 small gems.

Substitute for milk but DO NOT HEAT'
Vi cup strained orange juice
1 teaspoon grated orange rind
Melt shortening before adding with
other ingredients to orange juice as
directed in the recipe at the left. First
rising will require 60-60 minutes. After
baking, while still warm, glaze tops with
mixture of
Ye cup powdered sugar
2 teaspoons orange ulce
