Most practical and reliable
way to sterilize anything is by
heat, say bo'Ung water for five
minutes, boiling milk for five
minutes, subjecting bandages
wnd dressings to superheated
steam under pressure, passing a
needle or other metal Implement
thru a blue flame. Ironing any
thing thnt has been properly
washed makes it practically
sterile.
If you are going to open a
blister or a pimple or a boil or
try to dig a r-llver out of the skin
or attempt any minor surgery
such as paring corns you will be
on the safe side, In my opinion
(as a one-horse-and-buggy doc
tor), if you plunge the needle or
knife blade into a cake of wet
soap two or three times just be
fore the qperatlon begins, and
of course paint the immediate
field of operation with mild
tincture of iodine to disinfect
the skin.
Plain soap, any make suitable
for kitchen or tailct use, is per
haps the best nil around disin
fectant and antiseptic wo have
for most purposes where a good
disinfectant or antiseptic is re
quired. To the best of my knowledge
and b.Mlef the first aid applica
tion of a disinfectant or antisep
tic or germicide to a fresh
wound Is the only justifiable or
necessary use of germicide or

iology at the University of Utah
Gebhardt, who has spent 16
years studying and experiment
ing with polio, has a five-point
program for preventing the dis.
ease, but he says:
"I would be more alarmed If
my son should contract whoop
ing cough or measles than If he
should get polio.
"Most people fear polio more
than common illnesses such
measles and whooping cough be
cause its results have been more
widely publicized," Gebhardt
said.
Death Ratio Lower
"Polio is terrible, but many
people who are so afraid of it
and of its often-resulting pnraly
sls overlook the fact that, measles
often injures the heart and lungs
and that whooping cough in
many cases retards growth of the
brain.
"And the number of deaths re
sulting from measles and whoop
ing cough both on a percentage
and total basls is much higher
than the number of polio fatali
ties. In Gebhardt's opinion and he
says this is also the opinion of
many other doctors and scientists
most human polio cases are
contracted by eating food con
taminated by flies.
"It has been proved," he said,
"that certain species of flies, in
cluding the common housefly,
carry polio virus and that they
can contaminate food."

Supporting Gebhardt's belief
that flics spread polio is the fact
that all of the 241 Utah victims
whom he interviewed admitted
they had eaten fresh, unpeeled,
unwashed fruits or vegetables
shortly before contracting the
disease.
Lists Five Rules
"Then, there is the fact that
most new cases appear during
the fruit harvest season and at
times and in places where flies
are plentiful," Gebhardt said.
His five rules for preventing
polio are:
(1) Eliminate flies' breeding
places.
(2) Eliminate flies.
(3) Educate children as soon
as they are able to toddle to eat
only what food their mother
gives them and don't permit
them to eat out of doors.

(5) See that children's hands
