    EUGENE D. HAYES
Ten invasions in a year of
rugged campaigning against
Japanese bastions in the South
Pacific is the fighting record
compiled by the USS LSM 40, a
landing ship medium, of which
Ensign Eugene D. Hayes, 724
Alder street, Medford, is com
missary and ship's service of
ficer. Ensign Hayes is the husband
of Mrs. Evelyn Hayes and the
son of Mr. and Mrs. O. V. Hayes,
all of whom reside at the Med
ford address. He joined the com
plement of the LSM 40 before it
left the States in September,
1944.
The "40" got its baptism of air
raids at Morotai and took part in
most of the "Philippine landings,
including Bataan and bloody
Ormoc, in Leyte, and made its
tenth beachhead on Balikpapan
in Borneo, just six weeks before
Japan began begging for peace.

Barber's $&5
Letter lSLU
I was doing the weekly laun
dry when the near-elderly gentle
man entered the yard. He had,
he announced, come for a visit.
We were no end pleased but I
knew my husband shared my
own consternation as to how we
were going to add any lengthy
visiting to our already over
crowded schedule. Some of this
must have shown in our faces for
the man said, "Now you folks
,so right on with your work and
I will work with you. Right
now I'll help you hang up the
washing."
So he held the sheets while I
pinned them to the line. He
handed me the smaller pieces,
item by item. Then we came
to certain more private garments.
I hadn't blushed for 30 years,
but I did then. Not because
those garments were pink silk,
but because it had taken so
much pink silk for each one.
This generosity inferred an ex
pansiveness my outer garments
more or less camouflage.
But just the same, we did get
in quite a lot of visiting. Much
more than was accomplished
while the guest picked a tub of
fruit from the topmost branches
of the Damson plum trees. With
but one ladder, it was a solitary
job. Visiting also languished
while he fixed an ailing tractor,
due to the roar of the logging
operations thereabouts.
After three days of splitting
wood while I worked in Scribble
Shack and doing the chores
while the head of the house
painted a truck cab, he said he
must go home. But by this time
he was so popular, we couldn't
bear to part with him. In fact
we felt it would take well into
November to get all our visiting
done. Did he know anything
about repairing defunct electri
cal units? The hot-plate had a
burned out element. So he visit
ed with that for a while. Then
the gears in the wringer hnd
separator seemed a little off.
These provided the visitor witVi
a one-way topic for half a day.
We had other conversational
resources but this morning the
guest said he truly must leave.
We regretted this. There still
remained such little matters to
be discussed as the missing rung
in the ladder, the leaky faucet
m the bathroom and the genera
tor in the pickup needed debat
ing. But he still insisted he Pad
o go; said he seemed to be about
talked out.
I do not believe he is the talker
he used to be; seemed to me he
walked with a slight wobble
when he left. But I sure like
that man's conversation and hope
he comes again soon.
