cede that the
itching of ivy
p o i s o ning is
the most atroc

is I know, for
Dr. Brady
I have had practically everv
form of itch you can name.
First, it is my opinion that a
daily intramuscular injection of
ivy toxin or extract in the home
opathic dose designed for the
purpose, is the best treatment for
ivy poisoning. In many cases one
or two such "shots" will bring
relief and a good start on heal
ing within 24 to 48 hours.
Second I believe taking
homeopathic doses of poison ivy
(Rhus tox) taken in daily doses
progressively increasing for two
or three weeks early in the sea
son will confer considerable if
not absolute immunity to ivy poi
soning for the remainder of the
season. In the pamphlet on Ivy
Poisoning you may have on re
quest if you provide stamped self
addressed envelope I give detail
ed instructions for this method
of immunizing against ivy poi
soning. Many readers have assured me
that they have acquired immun
ity to ivy poisoning by simply
eating or chewing a wee bit of
poison ivy leaf. Some readers
have informed me that they suf
fered severe poisoning by trying
that. So I do not recommend the
experiment in any case.
A Boston physician reports
that scalding hot water will stop
poison ivy itching immediately
and even bring a quick end to
the attack. He discovered what
extraordinary relief scalding wa
ter gave to violent itching when
he had dermatitis. In desperation
he thrust his itching wrists under
the stream from the hot water
faucet, in and out quickly to
avoid scalding, for perhaps a doz
en times, and obtained lasting re
lief. Later he found the treatment
was equally effective for the
itch of ivy polsonnig, and for in
tense itching from other causes.
Two readers writing from
widely separated places inform
me that they found banana peel
gave grateful relief to the in
tolerable itching when the inside
of the peel was rubbed slowly
upon the itching surface.
Another reader reports that his
physician friend advised him to
plaster dampened salt over the

affected area, which he did, with
prompt relief and quick recov
ery. Still another reader tells us
that one need only apply white
of egg in the morning and for
get it.
These simple remedies sound
a little too much like magic, per
haps, but there is no harm in
trying them anyway.
First step in treatment of Ivy
poisoning is prolonged gentle
sponging of affected skin with
tepid soapy water to remove any
remain ing toxicodendron oil.
Then apply cloths kept moisten
ed with soapy water or with
pure grain alcohol or with water
containing a tablespoonful of
saleratus in the quart, or with
equal parts of pure grain alcohol
and tincture of iron chloride.
The wet dressings should be con
tinued for a 24-hour period. If
any blisters form, open them
with a flamed needle and care
fully press out the fluid on clean
gauze or, cottton and burn the
bits of gauze or cotton or dispose
of them without further contact,
to prevent spread of the poison
ing. In some instances-considerable
intense itching with some evi
dent skin irritation or desquama
tion persists for many months
after ivy poisoning. In such cases
a few "shots" of the same toxin
or extract now used for treat
ment of acute ivy poisoning, or
a course of the internal homeo
pathic medication mentioned
above should be tried.
