Most football games went accord
ing to the script today, but there
was one resounding upset, the
14 to 6 defeat o Cornell's big
red eleven by a supposedly claw
less Tiger team from Princeton.
It was the biggest surprise of the
national program.
There was a surprise to many
in the strong stand of Michigan
against an Army team that has
been classed as the greatest of
all collegiate gridiron combines.
The Cadets topped the Wolver
ines, 28 to 7 but not until they
had been in their biggest battle
to date. . .
Navy's Midshipmen also had
not too much margin to spare in
beating a stubborn Penn State
team, 28 to 0.
Columbias Lions, given a
strong sermon by Coach Lou Lit
tle at half time, went out to prac
tice what he had preached and
made four touchdowns to beat
Yale, 27 to 13.
In other eastern games, Michi
gan State topped Pittsburgh, 12
to 7, while Pennsylvania walked
over a North Carolina team, 49
to 0. Harvard edged Rochester,
21 to 13. Rhode Island used a
field goal to beat Maine, 10 to 7,
and Drexel prolonged City Col
lege's three year losing streak,
19 to 7.
Ohio State's two-year win
ning streak was tn jeopardy for
a time but the Buckeyes even
tually opened up for a 12 to 0
victory over Wisconsin, while
Purdue romped to a 40 to 0 win
over Iowa. Indiana handed Ne
braska a 54-14 beating. Notre
Dame, coasting along gave Dart-
mouth a 34 to 0 trouncing
Minnesota ran into trouble from
Fort Warren, but gained a 14
to 0 triumph.
The top teams of the Southland
moved ahead without difficulty.
The surprise was Duke's narrow
escape from defeat by Wake For
est. Duke squeezed out a 26 to
19 win. Alabama racked up a
55 to 0 score over South Caro

Gov Earl Spell was formally
requested today by representa
tives of several Portland groups
to diseet the attorney general
to conduct a grand jury im-esti-gation
into the death of Erwin
Jones, negro.
Jones was killed on August
21 by a police detective when
officers entered Jones apart
ment in Guilds Lake in search
of Scott Thomas, wanted on a
murder charge. A verdict of
justifiable homicide was return
ed by a coroner s lury W ednes
day after a two-day inquest.
It was asserted in the letter
to the governor that "the ver
dict constitutes an invitation to
lawlessness, a serious threat to
the security of all persons m
their own homes and a grave
miscarriage of justice."
