Hunting season for upland
game birds and migratory water
fowl opens tomorrow morning
and predictions are that nimrods
who trek to the open stretches
of the valley will have little
trouble bringing home the limit.
Large quantities of Chinese
pheasants and quail have been
reported in the valley regions.
Bag limit for pheasants is four
males a day, eight in possession
but not to exceed eight in any
seven consecutive days. Season
closes Oct. 28. Bag limit for
California or valley quail is 10
in any seven consecutive days
or in possession.
Duck and ,goose shooting will
not be good until the migrants
are blown out of the northlands
by a storm. Excellent weather
in the Canadian breeding
grounds is expected to keep the
fowl there for several weeks.
About the only shooting of
waterfowl now will be offered
where the birds have been nest
ing in Oregon.
Bag limit for ducks, except
American and red-breasted mer
gansers, 10 in any one day of
which not more than one may
be a wood cluck.
Bag limit for geese, except
Ross's goose, four singly or in
the aggregate of snow or white
fronted geese, and two of other
species including brant In any
one day. Total daily limit, six.

back on the job today, following
honorable discharges from the
service.
Worthlcy took over the coach
ing reins at the junior high and
will be assisted by Jake Schaef
fer, who had been signed as head
mentor in Worthley's absence.
Bowerman is now employed in
a teaching capacity at the high
school and advisor to Coach
Al Simpson. It was understood
there will be no change in the
present coaching set-up with
Simpson to finish the grid season
before any changes are considered.

old story again of Byron Nelson
against the field as 34 profes
sionals and 33 amateurs go into
the second round of the 72-hole
$10,000 Seattle Open Golf tour
nament at Broadmoor club today.
And the field was on the short
end of the odds after Nelson's
magnificant first round of 31-31
62, eight under par, yesterday.
A gallery of more than 2,000
persons, v;ho watched the Tole
do, O., master and his blistering
pace on the 18th hole, loosed a
cheer that reverberated over the
rolling Broadmoor acres.

spot to fish this week-end. Al
says steelhead are being taken in
most parts of the river. Some
anglers report good results on
single eggs while others have
better luck on roe. A light seven
strand wire leader with size four
or six hoek is advised for steel
head fishing.
We are forced to draw in
our horns on last week's state
ment that we didn't know how
reliable Piche's information
was since he had failed to ful
fill a promise to bring this de
partment a catch. Last Mon
day morning three nice trout,
taken near Gold Hill, were
found on our typewriter with
Piche's card attached. Guess
the guy can catch 'em, after
all.
Salmon are reported being
taken about five miles below
Grants Pass and apparently are
in good shape. This is the late
fall run of Chinook. Salmon
fishing at the mouth of the
Rogue is now good but will im
prove greatly after the first
heavy rains.
A cross section survey of
farmers of the valley report
pheasants and quail are nu
merous. Season opens tomor
row and runs until Oct. 28.
Opening day will find best
hunting In open country but
after the birds take that ter
rific beating on opening day,
best hunting will be along the
heavy brush of Bear Creek and
on the upper slopes of the east
side, along the upper irriga
tion ditch.
SEALS WIN FIFTH

The San Francisco Seals today
held a 3-2 edge over the Seattle
Rainicrs in the $10,000 Pacific
Coast League Governor's Cup
playoffs after a ninth inning
home run last night broke a tie
and gave them a 7-4 victory.
The winning run was scored
by Rightfielder Neil Sheridan
who hit a homer with two men
on base. Two of the three tallies
were unnccded.
The Rainiers led the game up
to the last half of the seventh,
4-0. The Suds scored first in the
fifth inning when Joe Dobbins
and Ted Norbcrt came home on
singles, a fielder's choice and an
error. In the seventh frame, Nor
bcrt beat the ball to the plate as
Hal Suemo pulled up at first on
a fielder's choice. Chuck Aleno
scored on Bob Gorbould's sacri
fice bunt.
Bob Joyce was credited with
his second win over Seattle in
the playoffs.
The teams meet tonight with
Bob Barlhclson on the mound for
the Seals against Joe Demoran.

Are Too Much For
Angelo Martinelli
Angelo Martinelli made a gal
lant effort to beat the Gray Mss-k
in their main event of last night's
Medford armory wrestling card
but fell victim to the Mask's
terrific head butts and lost, two
falls to one. Martinelli gave the
Mask a thorough going-over,
much to the delight of the sell
out crowd, but couldn't cope
with his adversary when the
butting started.
Gorilla Poggi took two straight
falls over Jack Lipscomb in a
short but wild bout. Poggi took
the first fall in the second round
with a half crab but fell victim
to Lipscomb's choke hold and
was counted out in the third
frame. As Lipscomb got to his
feet he stepped on Piggi's throat
and" that was too much for Re
feree Earl Yoakley, who gave
Poggi the match on a foul.
Norval Stockstill lost a one
fall decision to Joe Lynam, who
substituted for Tex Porter.
Stockstill made an excellent
showing until the third round
when Lynam's experience paid
off.
