ter Lake that strange smoke or
j steam clouds have been seen
i hovering over the lake on three
i different occasions recently.
Observers and park officials be
lieve that the smoke or gas may
have risen from vents in the
lake floor since on all three
occasions the lake was calm and
there was no wind or slides to
have caused the strange forma
tion. No less exciting was the
news that the Southern Pacific
had lestored train service south
from Grants Pass and Medford
to San Francisco. The service
was removed in January of
1942.
First political news in a long
time was that which told of the
possibility that Capt. William
McAllister, former speaker of
the Oregon house now in Eur
ope with a military government
unit, would run fcr a state of
fice during the primaries next
spring. McAllister is expected
home in January.
Friends were pleased to hear
this wtek that Lt. Don Stanley,
navy fighter pilot released from
Japanese prisoner camp a few
weeks ago, has arrived in San
Francifco and expects to be in
Medford soon. Fust Sgt. Ivan
Harrington, nt a Ninth air force
base in Fiance has been award
ed a bronze star and Lt. Maiden
LeRoy, now in Tokyo, has been
awarded the air medal for ser
vice nn Okinawa nnd the Philip
pine Islands. Pfc Robert E.
Alspaugh now wears a unit cita
tion wreath, his organization,
the 9fith Division having been
cited tcr its fine work on Leyte
and Okinawa.
Elmer H. Czech, aboard the
USS Intrepid, has been made a
cljief gunners' mate and Benny
Conlcy has been promoted to
ensign from chief petty officer
in the merchant marine. Reed
Cox, with the 101st Airborne
division in France, has been
promoted to corporal. Promo
tion to technician third grade
was recently given Glen Russell,
serving on Luzon,
From Tokyo comes word that
A. Dairell Mitchel, Slc, was
among the first navy men to ar
rive in Japan and that he helped
to put "Radio Tokyo" in opera
tion while Ensign Stanley Jones,
on the USS Panamint, helped
occupy the Moninato naval base
on Mutsu Bay, Honshu. Boyd
P. Tryon, chief water tender, is
on the USS Block Island, escort
carrier; LaVerne Dunagan is
service as a seaman on the USS

ward Conner and Roy Johnson

DIES IN EUROPE;
FATHER IS TOLD
Earl Hewitt Keeneway Drive,
has received official word from
the war department that his son,
Lt. Richard W. Hewitt, co-pilot
on a Liberator heavy bomber,
was killed while on a bombing
mission near Limeburg, Ger
many, April 4. He was flying
his 26th mission with the 445th
Bomb Group of the Eighth Air
Force.
In a later letter Hewitt wns
notified that the Purple Heart
was being sent to him in behalf
of his son. Lt. Hewitt had re
ceived the Air Medal with three
oak leaf clusters. ,
Born Dec 16, 1920, In Alden,
Minn., Lt. Hewitt came to Med
ford with his parents In 1933.
He attended Medford schools
and played footbull while in
high school graduating In 1940.
Before entering the army
Dec. 26, 1941. he was employed
bv United States Forest Service
i in Medford. He received special
ized training in various army
school! and In October, 1944,
went overseas for combat duty.
He Is survived by his grand
mother. Mrs Florence Winter,
j r.nd sister, Mrs Gordon Barker,
both of Medford, and another
I lister, Mrs. Melvln Nipps, Ore
j gon City.
