The city of Billings, third largest
in the state,, resembled a ghost
town today as public gathering
places were quarantined in an
attempt to combat an outbreak
of infantile paralysis.
City health officials said that
48 cases including eight fatali
ties, had been reported since
Sept. 3.
Children under 18 years of age
were restricted to their homes
in Billings and Yellowstone coun
ties, and police began strict en
forcement of an order closing
schools, churches, theaters, cock
tail lounges, bowling alleys, ice
cream parlors, dance halls and
card and game rooms.
CATALINA. REOPENING
Avalon, Cal., Oct. 9 (U.R)
Santa Catalina Island resorts,
closed since 1941, today antici
pated their largest tourist crowds
in history next spring and sum
mer. Resumption of regular pas
senger boat service to the famed
island is scheduled within 60
days by the Wilmington Trans
portation Co.

LEFTISTS GAIN IN
NORWEGIAN VOTE
Oslo, Oct. 9 (U.PJ Labor and
other leftist parties appeared to
day to have won majorities in
the Norwegian parliament elec
tions. On the basis of the first
250,000 votes counted, observers
estimated that the new parlia
ment would include 78 laborites,
28 conservatives, 22 liberals, 11
agriculturists, nine Christian
peoples' party members and
seven communists.
Counting of votes in the Oslo,
Bergen and Aker district in the
vicinity of Olso was scheduled
to begin today.
The communists and laborites
together may have gained
working majority In the ISO
member parliament, which suc
ceeds the one held over since
1936. Norway's parliamentary
election was the first in any lib
erated Europeari country.

than double the prewar total
will jam American highways
within 15 years, C. K. Whittaker,
president of Studebaker Pacific
Corp., said today. Whittaker told
an auto dealers' meeting that
early postwar models would cost

conscientious objector has won
the congressional medal of
honor.
The man is Pfc. Desmond T.
Doss, Lynchburg, Va. He won
the medal for outstanding brav
ery as a member of a medical (
corps on Okinawa the war de-1
partment announced today.
Doss is believed to ' be tne
first conscientious objector ever
to win the highest award for J
valor. He was wounded twice.
His beliefs did not permit him '
to bear arms, but he was agree-'
able to serving in the army In a 1
non-cimbatant post.
The 26-year-old soldier, al
though he bore no arms, per
formed so many feats of heroism
on Guam, Leyte, and Okinawa
that his name became a symbol
of gallantry throughout the 77th
infantry "Statue of Liberty
