An inexperienced Oregon
State team came from behind in
the last minute to tie a Camp
Beale team, 14-14, here Uday.
It was the opening game of
the season for Oregon State and
the first played by the squad in'
three years.
The Camp Beale team scored
first only three seconds before
the end of the first half, when
Montgomery, right end, took an
18-yard pass in the end zone.
Morgan took Walthall's pass
for the extra point. The Staters
hit paydirt on the fourth play
of the final quarter when Full
back Stevens hit the the line
Wires yards for a touchdown aft
er a 62-yard drive. McGuire of
Portland converted, tying the
score. The soldiers scored a few
minutes later when Deterville re
covered a fumble on the OSC 40.
In three plays Camp Beale pass
ed to a second touchdown.
With only 26 seconds remain
ing in the game, Garth Rouse
of Woodburn, sub fullback, scor
ed on fourth down from the one
yard line with McGuire kicking
the goal.

tackle for big gains, the Bruins
opened up a 20-7 lead, only to
almost lose the game as the navy
marched through UCLA's poor
pass defense.
The winners showed the same
strong running attack that char
acterized their opener against
Southern California last week,

mained unable to mend the glar
ing pass defects that cost him

Capt. Louis Zamperini, former
Olympic track star, arrived in
Hawaii late yesterday aboard an
ATC plane 28 months after leav
ing here in a bomber on a rou
tine flight.
Zamperini's plane was forced
down at sea and after 47 days
on a raft he and two other men
reached a Japanese Island and
were captured. Zamperini will
remain here several days visit
ing friends and then will fly to
his home town of Torrance,
