occasion which, this year, has
an exciting new significance.
After their great wartime
job, the newspapers are dedicat
ing themselves to a greatcr-than-ever
task to provide the
information needed as a guide
by a self-governing people who
find themselves in a brand new
world where even early 1945
has become a part of the Long,
Long Ago.
Since last Spring we have re
vamped both the physical world
and the man-made world! We
smashed the Axis and we've
split the atom! And, since last
Spring, the nations have adopt
ed a new way to live together
ts friends.
These epic events have set
the newspapers their new task
and have given high purpose to
the slogan of National News
paper Week: "A Free Press
the Torch of World Peace!"
For it was the newspapers that
told the first full story about
them all the atomic bomb,
victory, everything. And it will
be the newspapers which bring
the details of mankind's strides
and struggles from now on.
How Important that contri
bution will be already has been
indicated by the quids adop
tion of the San Francisco Char
ter. Observers credit its prompt
acceptance primarily to the com
pleteness with which the press
kept the people informed about
the San Francisco Conference
and thereby established their
pattern for service in the tre
mendous future.

ing of nationalistic thought with
internationalism, they mignt as
well prepare themselves for an
atomic war which could destroy
an entire nation in one day, de
clared the Archduke- Felix of
Austria in an address last night
at the auditorium before- mem
bers of the newly organized
Knife and Fork club and guests.
His subject was "Rebuilding
Europe."
The speaker defined "a broad
Christian peace" as one which
would promote individual rights
for the people of all countries
such as the citizens of this na
tion enjoy, one which would as
sure representation for minori
ties and promote equality as well
as majority rule and pointed out
that the United States form of
government supplies all these
for its people in practically a
perfect form.
Need Outlook Change

from economic causes but also
from the promotion of national
ideologies, sucn as Nazism in
Germany, and said that unless
nations changed from the na
tionalistic outlook to an inter
national viewpoint, civilization
would be destroyed. The speaker
said extreme nationalism must
not be confused with patriotism.
The duke stated he did not be
lieve Europe was ready foi a
United States of Europe at this
time but proposed instead groups
of confederacies, one to be in
central Europe, one for the Bal
kan states, one for the Scandi
navian countries, etc. By begin
ning first with these smaller con
federacies which would work
out their economic and political
problems, a United States of
Europe would ventually evolve
from this nucleus, he said. He
believes Europe, especially the
small nations, would welcome
such confederacies.
Europe Disappointed
Discussing the United Nations
Organization, the duke declared
most Europeans were somewhat
disappointed with the San Fran
cisco agreement, and that since
recent developments, including
the atomic bomb, had already
made revision imperative, he be
lieved this should be worked
upon immediately.
Europeans are especially dis
satisfied with the veto provistuiis
of the UNO charter, the duke de
clared, and added that the pre
sent veto provisions leaves little
security for the smaller powers
and cited this as an instance
where "equality" was needed
rather than "majority" rule. He
cited the international labor of
fice provisions of the charter as
being especially desirable and
said he believed this would
eventually materially aid in
solving Europe's economic prob
lems through dissolving of trriff
barriers and other adjustments.
Giving the present London
conference between the five big
world powers as an example,
Archduke Felix said questions
which concerned all nations
should not be settled by just a
few and pointed out that the
Italian peace decisions were be
ing made by representatives of
countries who had little know
ledge of and less interest in, the
Italians.
Food Need Desperate
During a question period the
speaker said the food situation
in Austria is desperate, with the
people actually receiving less
food under the Allied occupation
than they received under the
Germans. Questioned about
Russian influence in central
Europe, the duke said he believ
ed this would turn out to be
negligible if democratic elections
were conducted without outside
influence. He said democratic
elections need not be "troop
controlled" but would result
from complete freedom of the
press. In all instances, the
speaker said, the people of each
section and each nation should
be permitted to decide questions
for themselves whenever pos
sible. '
Archduke Felix was introduc
ed by Frank Van Dyke, Ashland,
a vice president of the club, and
the Rev. George R. Turney, pre
sided. The Rev. Henry Orth
delivered the invocation. E. E
Schlotz, national organizer for
the Knife and Fork club, spoke
Drieiiy and read congratulatory
messages from the national of
fice and other Oregon clubs.

The U. S. Army Recruiting
Station, in Room 1 of the Post
Office Building, was officially
reopened today to accept and
forward to Portland applicants
for enlistment or reenlistment in
the U S. Regular Army.
Sgt. W M. Kleinsmith is in
charge and is assisted by Techni
cal Sgt. W. M. Halstead. Vacan
cies are available, Sgt. Klein-
smith said, for any arm and
branch of army service and for
any overseas theatre desired.
Age limits are from 18 to 34
years of age inclusive and all
men must be physically fit for
full military duty.
The Army Recruiting Office
hours are from 8:30 A.M. to
5:00 P.M., daily except Sundays
and holidays. Telephone num

CURE-ALL COSMIC

tU.R) Roy Beebe and his cure-all
cosmic ray machine were given
30 days to find a new location
today, after neighbors com
plained they couldn't take a bath
without finding some of Beebe's
patients perched on the water
closet. Weary Long Beach citizens
told the city council that 4,000
visitors pounded their way daily
to the wiry, black-haired "re
search chemist's" door. En route
they stirred up dust, tangled
traffic, made noises, sang, built
bonfires, and made funny faces
at passing children, the neigh
bors claimed.
Disturbance Created
Shortly after the atomic bomb
news was released Beebe's
"guests" almost trebled and they
streamed into his house from 6
a. m. to 11 p. m., trampling flow
ers and breaking milk bottles,
neighbors said.
The sympathetic council after
consulting zoning ordinances
asked Beebe to sign a promise
that he would move within 30
days, or they threatened to have
his activities declared a public
nuisance.
Beebe doesn't charge anything
for cosmic ray baths, drinks of
cosmic-treated water, or for sam
ples of cosmic-treated wheat.
However, he admitted that his
patients sometimes leave "gifts"
as they pass out the door.
Cosmic Box Mystery
Beebe claims that since Janu
ary 1 over 750,000 persons have
brought him jars of water and
loaves of bread to be "soaked"
in his little cosmic ray box.
Scientists are slightly puzzled
about just how Beebe gathers
the cosmic rays, which he claims
emanate from Interstellar space
into the box.
"We don't see how It could be
done," they declared.
And Beebe won't tell them.
