McElhose of Medford, Oregon,
was a member of B-29 crews of
the famed 19th Bombardment
Group who played a part In
Japan's defeat by flying mis
sions against strategic targets
until the Nipponese surrender.
As part of the Guam-based
314lh Bombardment Wing, this
Supcrfort flier contributed to
the Wing's impressive record of
60,000.000 pounds of bombs
dropped on 98 targets on 61 mis
sions during the 20th Air
Force's all-out 160-day air as
sault between March 10 to Aug
ust IS.
For his part In this offensive,
this Oregon flier received the
following awards: Air Medal
with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and
Distinguished Flying Cross with
one cluster. '

sailed into Tokyo Bay aboard
this chip and landed the first
occupation forces on the con
quered soil of Japan.
A few hours before General
of the Army Douglas MacAr
thur's triumphant arrival at At
sugl airfield, the Meriwether
landed a contingent of Marines
at Futts Sakl, on the eastern
shore of Tokyo Bay. The ship
moved past silenced Japanese
batteries of 18-inch guns and un
loaded the first Marine occupa
tion force.

sion in the Pacific Franklin A.
I Elrod, Route 4, box 205, Med
ford, Oregon, has been promoted
t to sergeant.
Sgt. Elrod Is a machine gun
squad leader with the 306th in
fantry, 77th (Statue of Liberty)
division.
He was inducted Into the army
June 10,1944, and received his
basic training at Camp Wolters,
Texas. He joined the 77th divi
sion in June 1943.
Sgt. Elrod graduated frpm the
Medford high school in June
1949 and prior to his Induction
he was employed by the South
ern Oregon Sugar Pine Com
pany. He is authorized to wear the
Asiatic-Pacific ribbon with one
battle star and the good conduct
ribbon.
His wife, the former Allene
Bumgardner, and their two chil
dren reside at the Medford, Ore.,
address.

Fort Lewis, .Wash. Richard
H. Witt of Medford, Ore., who
for the past 3.i years has served
in the AAF, will revert to In
active status on Oct. 1, it was
anonunced by Lt. Col. Harvey
D. Taylor, commanding the sep
aration center here.
Lt. Witt will return to Med
ford where he will resume his
profession In connection with
Beck s Bakeries.

Somewhere in the Pacific
Elmer Herman Czech, chief gun
ner's mate, USN, whose wife
lives at 315 West 2nd street,
Medford, Ore., whose parents,
Mr. and Mrs. William Czech,
live at route 1, Watertown, S.
Dak., took part In a dual cele
bration aboard his Pacific air
craft carrier, the USS Intrepid,
on August 18. The officers and
men of this famed ship celebrat
ed the victory in the Pacific and
the observance of the ship's sec
ond year in service.
The day of celebration began
with thanksgiving services and
closed with a spectacular fun
show. The noon meal was tur
key With all of the trimmings.

Aboard the USS Nevada in
the Pacific Hershey J. Thomas,
seaman, second class, USN, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas D. Her
shey, Butte Falls, Ore., celebrat
ed the surrender of Japan
aboard this famous American
battleship as she rested at an
chor in Leyte gulf after a 32-day
mission into the East China sea.
The announcement by the
commanding officer that the
Japanese had quit touched off a
demonstration unlike any this
veteran ship had ever seen. Sai
lors tossed their hats in the air
and began jitterbugging to the
strains of the ship's band. It was
"Holiday routine" for all hands.

In the Western Pacific F. L.
Fousha, seaman, first class,
whose wife, Frances, lives on
Route 1, Medford, Ore., serv
ing on the USS Rutilicus, a navy
cargo carrier, has a personal in
terest In island hopping his
ship has been linking these far
flung bases in a supply lifeline
since the westward offensive be
gan in the Gilberts.
Operating through rain, air
raids, and darkness, "Rudy's"
crew have brought supplies
everything from battle equip
ment to groceries to augment
invasion drives In the Marshalls,
Marianas and the Philippines.
Ralph DeJarnett
Headquarters, 13th Air Force,
Philippines Ralph E. DeJar
nett, son of Mr. Roger DeJarnett,
5637 North Interstate, Portland,
recently was promoted to ser
geant. He is an airplane mech
anic In one of the B-24 squad
rons of the 13th Air Force's
"Bomber Barons" Liberator
group.
Since arriving overseas in
September, 1943, and joining
the "Jungle Air Force" he has
seen action in the Solomons, the
Admiralties, New Guinea, Neth
erlands East Indies and the
Philippines.
Howard Wilson
Howard Sticfel Wilson, sea
man, first class, USNR, Route 1,
Medford, Ore., served aboard the
famed Pacific fleet aircraft car
rier, Enterprise, the "fightingest
carrier in the fleet," now back
in the States for repairs after
having been hit by a Jap suicide
plane on May 14. The Enter
prise, whose record of battles
dates back to Pearl Harbor, ac
counted for 911 Jap aircraft shot
down by her planes and guns,
and 71 ships sunk and 192 prob
ably sunk by her planes during
her 275,000 miles of war duty.

guished flying crosses and 81
air medals.
Pvt. Lee Bumbardntr
With U. S. Forces In France
At a formal ceremony held In
Paris recently, Pvt. Lee R. Bum
gardner, a former tank driver,
now a guard with the 382 mili
tary police Bn.. at the Calas
staging area In Southern France,
was presented with the silver
star medal.
Pvt. Bumgardner, the husband
of Mrs. Fern L. Bumgardner of
Medford, Ore., was with the
702nd tank Bn., in Luxembourg
last Christmas Eve when the
Germans waged a sneak attack
against his unit. While running
for protection within his tank,
which was covering a road
block, he was wounded by a bul
let, but continued oh. Upon
reaching the machine-gun
mounted on his tank, he fired
upon the enemy, killing approxi
mately 40 of them, and thus
holding up their attack consid
erably. Vernal Bumgardner, Jr., a
brother, Is serving with the
army .air corps.
