PLANS TO OPEN
WINTER TALKED
First plans for a program to
make Crater Lake park avail
able lor winter visitors were
made at a meeting of the Jack
son County Chamber of Com
merce park committee held yes
terday afternoon. Invited to the
meeting was E. P. Leavitt, park
superintendent, who spent the
day here on business.
Latest policies of the National
Park service concerning a win
ter program, as outlined in a
recent bulletin, were discussed
The bulletin stated that it is "the
policy of the National Park
Service to encourage a winter
use program that will result in
the maximum benefits possible
to the largest number of people
to an extent which will not re
sult in impairment of the re
sources."
In the case of Crater Lake
Park, it is pointed out that funds
for keeping open roads to the
park have not yet been assured,
but that the Chamber of Com
merce committee and the park
authorities are working on this
While here Leavitt root rted
that the fine weather in recent
weeks had resulted in many
travelers to the park, with espec
ially heavy week-end travel.
Closing date of the nark wil de
pend upon the weather, amount
of travel and development of
plans for the winter program he
said. The park staff is still much
smaller than normal.
Members of the chamber park
committee are A. S. Cummins.
Mark Goldy, Eugene Thornuike,
George Frey, L. T. Nygaard and
Herb Grey. Frank Hull, mana
ger of the county chamber is in
Grants Pass today to attend a
meeting of the Highway 99 asso
ciation and will discuss the park
program with that group.
Leavitt, accompanied by his
wife, returned to the park last
night.
