slated here today.
Rowland's announcement fol
lowed completion of the morn
ing session of a general meeting
which was attended by all club
presidents and other officials
Today's discussions were infor
mal and described as preliminary
talks on topics expected to come
before the annual league meet
ing in December.
Rowland pointed out that the
distances involved between cities
does not justify the use of air
travel. He said the railroads had
stuck by the league for many
years and now the league was
going to stick by the railroads

the Seats, was around when the

The American league pennant
race became virtually a two
team affair today as Detroit
walloped the Yankees, 11 to 4,
and Washington defeated the
Browns, 4 to 1,
It was league-leading Detroit's
fifth victory in seven games with
New York, and dropped the
Yanks 714 games behind. Wash
ington's win was its fifth in six
games with the Browns, who
now are seven games out. St.
Louis has 21 games to play and
New York 22, and both would
need a near-sweep, coupled with
a collapse of the Tigers and Sena
tors, to grab the pennant.
Washington Is a game and a
half in back of Detroit, and it
appeared that the Tiger series at
Griffith stadium, opening next
Saturday, might be the pennant
payoff.
Hank Grecnbcrg led the Tigers
in today's victory, batting in five
runs with a three-run homer, a
single and a long fly. Paul
Trout started for Detroit and got
credit for his second win in the
series.
President Watches
President Truman was in the
stands as Washington topped the
Browns, largely on the eflorts
of two Brown castoffs Pete Ap
plcton and Mike Kreevlch.
Applcton, who made only relief
pitching appearances for St.
Louis, went the route for Wash
ington and stopped St. Louis
with five hits. Kreevlch made
two hits, batted in two runs and
scored once.
Jess Flores' six-hit hurling
gavo the Philadelphia Athletics
a 9 to 0 victory over the Chicago
White Sox, who began their
eastern trip as a pennant dark
horse but lost four of seven to
the A's.
Cleveland's Indinns, another
team which started east with
high hopes, lost to Boston, 9 to
4, for their fourth loss in five
games with the Red Sox.
The National league race
tightened up as the New York
Giants shut out Chicago for the
second straight day, 3 to 0. The
Cubs now lead St. Louis by M V4
games. Harry Feldman gave up
eight hits to seven off Paul Der
ringer, but the Giants bunched
four of them In the ninth for
three runs,
Pete Coscarart's single In the
12th inning drove In the run
which gave the Pittsburgh Pi
rates a 6 to 5 victory over Brook
lyn. The game was delayed more
than an hour by rain after Bob
Elliott opened the 12th with a
single and went to second on a
balk by Clyde King.
St. Louis, Boston, Cincinnati
and Philadelphia in the National
league were not scheduled.

President and Mrs. Truman went
on a typical American Saturday
afternoon outing today a base
ball game replete with ice cold
pop and three baggers, cheers for
fine catches, and boos for errors
and the umpire.
It was the first time since
Pearl Harbor that a president
has fcone to a ball game. The
president and his White House
staff joined cabinet members
and congressmen not to men
tion some 20.300 other citizens
at the Washington Senators St.
Louis Browns game at Griffith
Stadium. The Senators won, 4-1.
It was a sticky hot afternoon
and the grandstand was jammed.

sioner, Sen. A. B. (Happy) Chan
dler. D. Ky., and that grey vet
eran of baseball, Washington
Owner Clark Griffith, vied with
each other In playing host to the
president.

season will be held at Medford
high school Sept. 14 at 2:30 p. m.,
according to word received from
Tom Pigott, secretary of the Ore
gon High School Activities' Asso
ciation. A continued meeting will be
held at 7:30 p. m. at which time
rules will be discussed. A similar
meeting and examination will be
held at Klamath Falls Sept. 12.
A new mineral resource of
Texas has been found in the
beds of pebbles along river
courses of the coastal plain. The
pebbles are used in grinding operations.
