Limping Detroit Bengals
Defeat Yankees, 10 To 0
New York. Sept. 8 (U.R) It
was almost quiet enough to hear
a bomb drop in the Detroit dress
ing room, but in all the bedlam
following a 10 to 0 victory over
the Yankees there wastTt one
word about a pennant.
The cheering was for Paul
(Dizzy) Trout, whose seven-hit
moundcraft silenced the Yankee
bats and Hank Greenberg and
Roger (Doc) Cramer, whose
booming homers paced the 15
hit attack. The victory boosted
their lead to two-and-a-half
games, widest margin they have
enjoyed in nearly three weeks.
Much Back-Slapping
Pennant talk is taboo In a
race as tight as. the American
League strrtch drive and be
sides the Tigers had won only
one game in a scries of seven.
But there was back-slapping, ex
changing of compliments, and
other evidences of confidence.
Trout's return to form was a
big morale booster because the
pitching staff is weakened badly
for the six remaining games in
the all-imporlant series with
the Yankees. The big winner,
Lefty Hal Ncwhouser, still Is In
Detroit with a side injury. Even
If he pitches in tue series, he
may not be In top form.
Alton Benton, a sensation
early In the season Is In a slump.
He failed to finish his last six
starts and has gone without a
victory since Aug. 6. Little Tom

The Tigers made all their hits
off starter Allen Gettel. Trout
touched off the offensive with a
Ingle which drove In the first
run. But they could do nothing
for three-and-a-half Innings
against 43-year-old Paul Schrol-
ber. who took over as a Yankee
hurler.
The second place Cardinals
blew a chance to gain on the
leading Cubs In the National
when they played to an 8 to 8
tie in 12 Innings In their final
game of the season with Pitts
burgh. The game was called
when the Pirates had to leave
to catch a train, Just before the
Cardinals baited In the 12th. The
game was wiped from the books
since tne teams do not meet
again,
There were no other major
league games.

TEAM TO 13-6 VICTORY
Behind the steady pitching of
14-year-old Doris Hlckson, the
Orphnns halted the Amazons 13
to 6 In the girls' city Softball
league last night. Not only did
the little left-hander pitch an ex
cellent game by allowing only
Ix hits, but hit four singles out
of four trips to the plate to lead
her team at bat. The Orphans
came up with one home run, five
triples, two doubles and nine
Ingles to accumulate 17 hits.

The appalling number of men
rejected for military service dur
ing this war because of physical
defect, prompted the Army and
Navy to atre.s sports in their
training programs, Howard Hob
son told members of the Medford
Rotary club Tuesday in a lunch
eon meeting address. The Uni
versity of Oregon's basketball
end baseball coach predicted a
great era for sports of all kinds
as a result of Interest stimulated
in wartime sporting activities.
Recently back from Italy
where he assisted the Army in a
sports program, Hobson told of
intense interest In football, base
ball, basketball and boxing in the
Italian theatre of war. Games
were even conducted just behind
the fnnt lines, the speaker told

pated in final playoffs in a bas-

several hundred teams in action
Following the last war little

ticipation in athletics, Hobson
said. This time it will be differ
ent. Generous use of air travel

seem bright with all but one of

gon. IJaseball will be accorded a
more important place in the uni
versity's sports program with in

Jim, from Pvt. John W. Free-

of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Frecland,

The two-page paper, published 1
August 22 headlining news of
the atomic bomb, was sent home
by Pvt. Freeland while on a five
day furlough in Manila.
