Manila, Aug. 81 U.B Seven
American Liberator airmen were
either back in the United States
today, or well on their way,
after spending seven months
among former head-hunters in
the wilds of Borneo.
Members of the 13th Air
force's Fifth Bomber group, they
were rescued by Australians who
found them chumming around
with a huge native chief named
Sadi who once had the largest
collection of peeled heads south
of Brunei Bay.
The Liberator crew took off
Nov. 16 to attack a Japanese
flat-top but instead they ran into
three battleships and between 30
or 40 enemy cruisers and de
stroyers. The orders were to attack, so
they did. Enemy flak killed the
navigator, Lt. Fred Brennan of
Los Angeles Instantly. Lt.
Jerome Rosenthal, the co-pilot
from Los Angeles, was also hit
but managed to give the order
to bail out as the big bomber
limped back over land. Later
Rosenthal died and he and Bren
nan, along with Lt. Thomas
Coberly, the pilot, were buried
In Borneo.

D00L1TTLE RAID
TO AROUSE JAPS
Tokyo, Aug. 31 (U.R) A
question unanswered since the
Doolittle Taid on Tokyo in 1942
was answered today.
At the time of the raid the
American naval force carrying
Doolittle's planes toward Japan
came upon a small Japanese ves
sel which was sunk.
Not knowing whether the ves
sel had sent a warning, it was
necessary to launch the raiding
planes from a greater distance
than had been planned. It was
this additional distance that
caused many of the planes to
come down before reaching
China bases.
Today it was learned that the
precaution was justified; the
message was sent before the
enemy vessel went down.
The warning caused an alert
in Tokyo before the Doolittle
raiders arrived, and the vessel's
captain was awarded a high de
coration by the Japanese govern
ment. But the Japanese population
took the warning lightly. A resi
dent of Tokyo said today he was
attending a ball game when one
American plane flew over at a
low altitude.
The crew, he said, appeared to
be waving handkerchiefs at the
Japanese crowd.

TO RETAIN PEACE
San Francisco, Aug. 31 (U.R1
The peace of the moment will
be lost unless Americans are
willing to sacrifice as unitedly
and as purposefully as they did
during the war, Gov. Robert S.
Kerr of Oklahoma said last nUht
at a Jefferson day dinner here.
He said his greatest fear is
that America's productive capa
city, miraculous as it was in
war, may not be able to keep
pace with tremendous demands
for homes, autos, radios and the
like.
