the U. S. army air forces air
transport command will imme
diately revert to a peacetime
basis and between 1,800 and
3,000 men will be returned to
the United States within a week,
Col. H. J. Kieling, deputy divis
ion commander, announced yes
terday. The division was stnrted In
October, 1942, and since that
time has ferried thousands of
aircraft and tons of war mater
ial to Russia.
Col. Kieling said present plans
indicate that eventually the bas
es of the division stretching from
the United States through Can
ada to Nome, Alaska, would be
reduced to seven. Those re
maining probably will be at
Minneapolis, Minn; Great Falls,
Mont.; Seattle, Wash.; Edmon
ton, Whitehorse, Yukon Terri
tory and Ladd Field, Fairbanks,
he said.
The bases at Calgary, St. John,
Watson Lake and Fort Nelson
are to be turned over to the
Canadian government by Oct. 1,
