OBITUARY
MRS. PEARL MARTIN
.lrs. Pearl Martin, a resident
cf Medford-for the last 17 years
passed away at a local hospital
following a short illness. Mrs.
Ma.f.i was born in Provo, Utah,
on October 5, 1881. She was 63
years 10 months and 24 days at
the time of her passing.
On January 14, 1907, she was
married to Joseph Martin at
Mammouth, Utah. To this union
we.e born four children.
Mrs. Martin leaves to mourn
her passing, her husband Joseph
Martin of Medford, three sons,
EJward B., of Portland, Ore.;
George H., of Ashland, Ore.; and
Donald G., stationed in the Phil
ippines. A bro.her, Ray Jones of
Mammouth, Utah, and three
grmdchildren.
Funeral services will be an
nounced later by the Perl Fu
neral Home pending arrival of
relatives.

Navy and marine spokesmen
toM the house military affairs
committee today that the draft
must be continued to meet their
needs in the next year.
-lie navy plans to cut its pres
ent strength of 3.389,000 to
500,000 by Sept. 1, 1946. The
marine corps probably will dis
charge 221,471 of its present
421,370. The total discharges of
ma. ines may be stepped up, per
haps to 396,467.
To offset these releases the
navy must induct 252,000 in the
nxt year. Marine plans call for
recruiting 45,000 new men after
V-J day is declared.
Capt. H. G. Hopwood, special
assistant chief of naval person
nel, said 16,000 men volunteer
ed for navy service the past
month. However, he explained,
this rate was expected to drop.
Men must be drafted to make
up the lag, Hopwood said.
"We must have an anchor to
windward, namely a continuance
of selective service," he said.

of the marine corps revealed
that the corps proposed post
war strength is 100,000.
Marines with a point score of
85 or above are eligible for dis
charge. Those with 70 points
or more will be sent overseas.
Until the Japanese reaction
can be gauged, it is impossible
to blueprint accurately the mar
ine situation, he said.

Chilean Airfields
To Connect Nation

Work is going on to connect the
extreme south of Chili to the
rest of the world by air. Air
fields are being constructed at
Porvenir, Springhill, Felipe
Bay, Gente-Grande, Cape Cata
lina and Cape Delgada with the
co-operation of local sheep in
terests. These modern Installations
will be the stepping stones for
the Chiliean Air Line "LAN"
services to the Punta Arenas,
Tierra del Fuego and Ultima Es
pernnza reqions.
Two partially completed con
crete landing strips are in opera
tion at Porvenir, one 3,000 by
1.200 feet, and the other 2,700
feet long by 300 feet wide.
At Springhill, the main land
ing strip for prevailing winds Is
partially completed and In use
with a length of 2,100 feet, BOO
feet wide.
Other air strips are projected
In Patagonia and Kimirl Ayke.
The Kimiri Ayke Internationa?
airport will be the junction for
several routes, and will accom
modate, when finished, up to
the largest projected commer
cial planes.
The Catallna Bay airport will
be an alternate junction for
local, national and international
air traffic. It is placed suffic
cntly close to Kimirl Ayke. and
yet has a completely different
weather regime. Catallna Bay
will also be a military and naval
air base.
