FIRST AIR
OF
Prison Freed Comrade Gives
. New Details All But Two
: Bailed Out
Aboard the Mercy Ship
Beeves, Off Omori Prison Camp,
Tokyo Bay, Aug. 30 U.R How
Capt. Colin Kelly, first hero of
the Pacific war, actually died in
battle was revealed for the first
time today by a surviving crew
man of his Flying Fortress whose
lips were sealed by nearly four
years of confinement in a Jap
anese prisoner of war camp.
The additional details of Kel
ly's death after sinking the Jap
anese battleship Haruna off the
Philippines were told by Pfc.
Robert Altman, 26, Sanford, Fla.,
Just evacuated from the vile
Omori prison camp in the su
burbs of Tokyo.
Altman said he was loading
500-pound bombs into Kelly's
B-17 at Clark Field north of
Manila Dec. 10, 1941.
"Suddenly the Japanese
launched an air raid, and we had
to take off with only three
bombs," Altman said.
"We crossed Blgan in northern
Luzon and saw a party of Jap
anese landing under the protec
tive bombardment of three de
stroyers and one battleship cross
ing further out.
"Capt. Kelly made a run over
the battleship expecting to see a
carrier nearby. When none were
found he returned to attack the
battlewagon, later identified as
the Haruna.
"We dropped our three bombs
In train, scoring one direct and
two indirect hits. The second
bomb struck the ship's bridge.
"Our navigator, Lt. Joseph
Bean, observed black smoke
from the vessel's bridge from
20,000 feet as we hit for our
base.
"Two Japanese fighter pilots
Jumped us when we were five
kilometers from Clark Field,
and Kelly had dropped to 10,000
feet.
The B-17 "blew up" In less
than a minute after the Japanese
fighters set it afire, Altman de
clared. Of the ship eight-man
crew only Kelly failed to clear
ha nlnne he added. S'Sat. Do-
lchanty, the right tall gunner,
also was killed.
Altman said he was one of
five crew members who balled
out of the plane safely and reach
ed Clark Field unhurt, but was
later captured.
Prisoners who arrived in the
Omori prison camp during the
put year, he said, told him a
fantastic legend had grown up
that Kelly was the "first suicide
pilot" that he had flown his
plana down the Haruna'a smokestack.
the machine before officials of
the Cranberry Canners' Assn.,
and the U. S. Rubber Co., who
aided in developing the device.
