STORM BLOWS OUT
Houston, Tex., Aug. 29' (U.R
Residents of the stricken Gulf
Coast returned to their homes
today to view the havoc wrought
by a tropical hurricane which
destroyed millions of dollars
worth of crops and property be
fore blowing itself out in eastern
Texai.
The hurricane, one of the
worst to hit Texas in 20 years,
died yesterday almost as quickly
as it began, leaving in its wake
a toll of eight known dead.
The storm, accompanied by
wind? of 135 miles an hour at its
height, narrowly missed Hous
ton, Texas' largest city.

In my five years of practice
of dentistry as a civilian and
three years of service in the
Army I have made these obser
vations: 1. Some people get along well
without brushing their teeth.
2. Caries is not caused by un
cleanliness alone witness clean
but carious mouths and some
filthy non-carious ones.
3. Much periodontal disease
in young men in the army and
in civilian life is caused by lack
of hygiene of the mouth.
4. Periodontal disease (disease
of gums) may be arrested by
scaling the teeth, but will recur
unless proper toothbrushing is
instituted.
5. Proper tooth brushing,
without any other treatment,
will often cause distinct im
provement in the condition of
the gums.
Naturally I realize that many
forms of periodontal disease are
caused by traumatic occlusion,
faulty nutrition, systemic dis
eases, blood dyscrasias, endoc
rine disturbances and poorly fit
ting dental restorations ... -
May I suggest that you could
do more good by describing a
good method of toothbrushing
than by your present attitude. 1
do not believe anyone who
brushes his teeth will stop be
cause of your teachings. The
worst I can imagine is that your
teachings may discourage some
children from forming the habit.
Don't brush your teeth,
though. You probably don't need
it. If I stop for on day I can
tell the difference in the tone of
my gums. (Signed )

as you wish is quite harmless so
far as I know.
