the situation is still acute and
many applicants for tires have
not yet received tire certificates.
Eagles Meeting Crater Lake
Aerie No. 2093 and auxiliary,
Fraternal Order of Eagles, will
meet Thursday at 8 p.m. in their
hall, 219 West Main street, for
a social evening. Refreshments
wi'.l be served, and a program is
planned. Plans will be made
fo.' the official visit of Robert
Hansen, past grand president of
the Grand Aerie and editor of
the Eagles' magazine, who will
arrive from Milwaukee, Wis.,

Slightly Injured Donald
Blunkall, 212 South Orange
street, was taken to Community
hospital yesterday for treatment
of slight injuries received when
the auto in which he was a pas
senger was in collision at Main
street and Columbus avenue
with an auto operated by Earl
R. Fuller, 1803 West Main street,
city police reported this morn
ing. Driver of the car In which
Blunkall was riding was Lewis
O. Parker, 413 South Central
avenue.
Auto Mishaps An auto oper

damaged at noon yesterday
when in collision on Sixth
street near the post office with
a car driven by Eunice Hillis,
532 Plum street, an accident re
port filed with city police

report considerable damage was
caused yesterday afternoon to
autos operated by Leslie A.
Richards, 1059 Court street, and
Mrs. Lena E. Branch, of Grants
Pass, when they collided on
West Eleventh and King streets.
Thurman Home Lt. Louis R.
Thurman arrived in Medford
Sunday for a 30-dd.v leave with
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. B.
Thurman, 722 West Fourteenth
street. Lt. Thurman served a
year in Belgium, Holland and
Germany with the 9th Army and
was at Hannover when peace
. as signed. He received his of
ficer's training and commission
at a school north of Paris which
wis housed in Napoleon's old
palace. He reports to Camp Ro
berts. Calif., Sept. 26 for reas
signment. Lt. Thurman's bro
ther, Harry, telephoned his par
ents from Salt Lake last night
that he is leaving for the Philippines.

Thursday from Washington D.C.
to spend a 15 day furlough with
her parents. Seaman Hammack
was employed at O. and C. prior
to her entry into the Waves last
December.

ond Lt. Richard Frederick, son
of Mrs. Madge E. Frederick, 809
S. Peach street, was graduated
this month from MacDill Field,
Tampa, Fla., where he received
combat crew training as a navi
gator on a B-29 superfortress,
according to an announcement
from the field.

furlough after over two years in
the Pacific theater is Cpl.
Charles F. Simmons, who is vis
iting his wife at their home on
South Riverside avenue and his
brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs.

On Furlough Sgt. Ernie
Speaker is on a 30 day convales

Tex., hospital and is visiting
friends and relatives in Medford
for two weeks. He is now at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. A.
St. Clair, 6t3 N. ISartlett street,
and- will go next to San Dimas,
Calif., to visit his parents and
two sisters. Arriving in the
states July 24 from the Philip
pine Islands, Speaker has one
brother, Dorwyn, still in Ger
many. From California, he will
return to the hospital.

Okinawa, Aug. 29 (U.R)
President Truman has approved
the award of the Distinguished
Service medal to Gen. Douglas
MacArthur for his planning and
direction of the Philippines cam
paign, it was announced today.
MacArthur already holds the
Distinguished Service . medal
with two oak leaf clusters, the
Congressional Medal of Honor,
two Distinguished Service
Crosses, seven silver stars, twr
purple hearts, and numerous
foreign decorations.
The citation said, "As supreme
commander of Allied air,
ground, and sea forces in the
southwest Pacific, General of
the Army Douglas McArthur
planned and personally directed
the campaigns which resulted
in the liberation of the Philip
pine Islands.

Louise and Macila Miranda
the only "Siamese twins" in
medical history to be joined at
the front of their bodies today
were doomed to remain insepar
able throughout their probably
short lives.
X-Ray reports . showed that
while the three-day-old girls
have separate stomachs and in
testines, they have one liver in
common and their two intestinal
tracks are joined.
Physicians announced pre
viously that the babies could not
be severed unless each was an
atomically complete and organ
ically independent.
The babies were born Satur
day at nearby Coldwater to Mr.
and Mrs. Jesus Miranda, with
only Mrs. Miranda's mother in
attendance. They were taken to
St. Monica's hospital here Sun
day. V
Meamwhile, the twins were
eating and crying normally.
The Rev. Emmett McLoughlin,
O. F. M., superintendent of the
hospital, said research disclosed

The district OPA office an
nounced that restrictions against
issuing canning sugar coupons
were lifted Tuesday with a max
imum allowance of 10 pounds
per person in Washington and
Oregon.
The maximum will apply only
as long as the district's sugar
quota holds up. The supply was
described as "very short." The
canning maximum in southern
states has been cut to 5 pounds
per person.
