THE HARMLESS
Recently i correspondent ask
ed how he could drive bats out
of thu attic so he could close a
small opening
in the roof and
keep them out.
I u g g e s ted
that he blaze
away at them
with an air
rifle about
dusk till they
leave the attic,
then close the
opening.
Another cor
respondent has
Dr. Brady a better ans
wer:
Dear Sir: We kill bats, useful
snakes and lizards, useful spid
ers, dragon flies, useful hawks,
owls and other predatory birds
and mammals merely because
we are afraid of them or don't
like them or feel sorry for their
prey..
Bats in the United States, most
of Mexico and Canada are all
insectivorous. There are no fruit
bats or vampire (blood lapping)
bats In the United States. The
bats in the United States carry
vermin but not the kind of ver
min that will in any way bother
humans. Bats carry no bedbugs.
(Parade of the Animal Kingdom,
p. 5U6, Hegner, Smithsonian
Scientific Series No. 9. p. 320)
Bats eat mosquitoes. Mosquitoes
carry parasitic diseases as many
soldiers and sailors returning
from the Orient with malaria
and other such diseases know.
Most of our U. S. mosquitoes do
not carry malaria, but in some
parts of the South the malaria
carrying mosquitoes keep up a
pretty serious sickness and death
rate from malaria.
It would seem that we ought
to encourage the bat, as a useful
friend to man. Bats kill lawn
moths June bugs, . and many
other destructive insects. Bats
congregate thickest where there
are the most insects.
Personally I'd like to have
bats nest in the attic if I lived
near mosquito-breeding pool.

pond or other stagnant water.
If trie bats must be excluded
from the attic the easiest way to
discourage them is by keeping a
very bright light in the attic
night and day, using creosote
paint freely (bats do not like the
smell), or by putting on leather
or heavy canvas gloves and a
mask to protect the face and
hair (If you're afraid, tho really
they will avoid your face and
hair) and pick them up and put
them out gently, and then seal
or screen the opening through
which they gained entrance.
Please don't add to the preju
dice against such useful friends
as bats. We hurt both them and
ourselves by killing them.
(Signed .)
Thank you, B. J. I was 100
wrong in my answer and my
face is scarlet. The shameful
truth is that I answered the
query without properly weigh
ing the harmfulness against the
usefulness ot bats first. I had
only vague prejudlse against
them a prejudice, like most
such opinions, founded on
IGNORANCE.
