"OKIES" FLOCK
BACK TO DUST
Farmers Believe Money
Saved On War Jobs Will
Last Through 'Anything'
Kingman, Ariz., Aug. 28
(U.R) The dust bowl farmers
who flocked to California war
plants when the weevil and
drought riddled their crops are
streaming home now with
plenty of folding money to put
themselves back in the farming
business.
This time they predict tri
umphantly, they won't go broke.
Let the bugs come; let the storms
blow; let the rain refuse to rain.
What they've saved from their
war jobs on the west coast will
see ihem through almost any
thing. Most of them are headed back
to Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mis
souri, and Texas. And the bor
der inspectors say there is an
average of eight people to a car.
A few are going as far as Flori
da, South Carolina, and Tennes
see. They've lost their Jobs because
of government cutbacks. But
they're going back rich and rar
in'' to get started again..
I talked to more than three
dozen overalled farmers who
wbrked as welders and shipyard
workers. They'd saved enough
to pay off the mortgage on the
old homestead and start growing
cotton and corn for their own
profit.
Two or three had bought new
farms through the mail and said
they have yet to lay eyes on their
new homes.
"I stood a roof over my head
as long as I could, declared I
M. Farnsworth. who was a Doug
las welder at Long Beach. "Now
me and maw are goin' back to
" Oklahoma and raise corn and
pigs."
J. C. Arch, who was a lead
man at the Kaiser Richmond
yards, said he'd saved a pretty
big nest egg and was going to
use It to fix up his farm in Okla
homa "We'll even be doln' govern
ment work sorts," he declared.
"Only now it'll be producing
food instead of ships."
Most of them plan to get "a
lot of new machinery."
C. L. Massengale another ex
vatfi ttrnrlror wnq takintz his
wife, three children, and two
dogs back to Oklahoma in a
streamlined new car.
"I was a mechanic out here
for four years," he explained. "I
fill mv overtime Dav and
had a whoopin' good time on the
rest. But I've still got plenty ien
to set myself up in farming
again."

eligible for 40-year farm pur
chase loans under provisions of
the Bankhead-Jones tenant act
to promote ownership of family
type farms, announces Bruce E.
Stewart, County Farm security
Supervisor, 211 Fluhrer Build
ing, Medford. Oregon has been
allotted $140,000 for veterans,
and $95,523 for farm tenants out
of the congressional appropria
tion of $50,000,000 for these pro
grams. Farm ownership loans under
the act may be made up to
$12,000 in the case of qualified
veterans, while farm tenants
are subject to restrictions based
on the value of the average farm
in the county, explained Mr.
Stewart. Applicants locate the
farms they wish to buy and file
an application with the County
FSA office. Farms are apprais
ed on the basis of their long time
earning capacity and the appli
cant's qualifications for owner
ship are reviewed by the Coun
ty FSA committee of three local
farmers. If the farm is priced
on the basis of its actual value
and the applicant has the exper
ience for successful ownership,
the loan is approved. Loans are
repayable up to 40 years and
bear three percent Interest on
the unpaid balance.
As the state allotment of farm
ownership funds will be used
wherever suitable farms and ap
plicants can be found, the num
ber of loans this county receives
will depend on how quickly
local veterans and tenants file
their applications, said Mr.
Stewart.
Veterans who prefer to start
by renting or leasing farms and
are unable to secure necessary
operating credit are also eligible
for FSA loans to purchase live
stock, machinery, seed, feed,
household goods and minor im
provements up to $2,500.
