Tavored teams came through
In the first round of the Shaugh
nessy play-off for the Southern
Oregon baseball championship
at the Fairgrounds park here
yesterday. "
Klamath Falls Navy pounded
out a 20 to 7 victory over sn
out-classed Medford team and
Klamath Falls Marines eked out
a 10 to 9 decision over Central
Point but had to come from be
hind to do it.
The Marines jumped Into a 4
0 lead in the first inning and it
looked like another rout but the
Studs piled up a 7 to 4 lead In
their half of the second. The
Marines made it 9-7 at end of the
second and added one more in
the third. Central Point went
scoreless until the sixth when
one run crossed the plate and
then- added another in the
seventh. The Studs had the tie
ing run on first base and the
winning run at bat in the final
frame but could not collect.
The Navy led Medford 3 to 1
at end of the first inning but
the Craters gave seven runs in
the second, a lead which they
could not close. It was a loosely
played game with each club
making seven errors.
Behind the two-hit pitching of
Pat Patterson, formerly ' with
the Toledo Mudhens of the
American Association, the Navy
pulled a mild upset Saturday
night when they turned back the
Marines 11 to 1 T win the South
ern Oregon league championship.

The St. Louis Browns gained
two full games in the American
league yesterday, beating the
White Sox at St. Louis 3 to 2 in
10 innings behind Bob Muncrief
and 4 to 1 with Potter pitching.
The victories, coupled with
double defeats of the Tigers and
Senators, left St. Louis four and
a half games off the pace. Gene
Moore broke up the extra-inning
game with a homer.
The Cards moved within two
and a half games of the Cub;,
winning a single game at Chi
cago, 5 to 1 as Charley (Red)
Barrett won his 19th game. Just
a week ago today the Cubs led
seven and a half games.

Cleveland upset Detroit twice,
winning the first game 3 to 1 on
three unearned runs as Allie
Reynolds edged Paul (Dizzy)
Trout. Steve Gromek scored
the winning run after sinRling
in the ninth to break up the
second game. 5 to 4, for his 16th
pitching victory.
The Yankees made it four inj
a row over Washington at New
York, 3 to 2 and 7 to 1. Catcher
Mike Garbark drove in all the
runs for Charley Ruffing who
won his fifth game in the opener.

game for the Red Sox, beating
the Athletics at Boston, 4 to 3
with a 10th inning double which
scored the winning run. Rookie

seven run second inning sparked
by Jim Russell's three-run homer

The Crystal Plunge club of San
Francisco held its first national
AAU women's swimming cham
pionship today, thanks to the ef
forts of Mermaid Ann Curtis
who piled up 19 5 points to take
high-score honors.
Crystal Plunge scored a total
of 50 points to dethrone the Ri
viera club of Indianapolis. The
defending champions scored 20
points tying with the Multno
mah club of Portland. Ore.
Portland Wins Relay
In he final event of the meet
Brenda Helser, who lost to Miss
Curtis by a small margin in the
100-meter free style, anchored
the Multnomah club to its fifth
consecutive 300 -meter medley
relav championship.
Miss Helser swam her 100-
meter lap in the sensational time
of 1:05.4, 2.1 seconds under the
AAU record set by the San
Francisco winner last Friday
and two seconds better than the
American record set by Helene
Madteon.

Other members of the win
ning Medley relay team were
Suszanne Zimmerman and Nan
cy Merki. The time for the
event was 3:54.2.
Nineteen-year-old Miss Curtis
anchored the Crystal Plunge
team but was unable to keep up
with the flying Multnomah club
star. The San Francisco trio
finished second followed by the
Rivicria club and a second Cry
stal Plunge team, in that order.

former national diving cham
pion, amassed a total of 175 16
points for top diving honors.

Seventh-place Los Angeles, de
fending Pacific Coast League
champions, reared back Sunday
and knocked Portland off In
both ends of a doubleheader.
The scores were 8-6 and 10. In
doing so, the Cherubs handed
the Beavers their third straight
setback and second whitewash in
two days.
Coupled with Portland's twin
loss. Seattle divided two with
Oakland, and gained a half
game. The Rainiers now are
three and one half games behind
Portland in the seat. Oakland
won the opener. 5-4 but dropped
the nightcap, 4-3, as Carl Fischer
notched his 18th pitching vic
tor'. San Francisco won the first
game from Sacramento. 11-4, but
Guy Fletcher won the finale for
the Sacs. 10-2, to register his
22nd triumph. He is second to
the Seals' Bob Joyce In games
won. Big Bob has won 28. Hol
lywood and San Diego split a
pair. The Stars won the first.
8-6, but lost the second to Carl
Dumler, 3-1.
The Beavers got off to a 5-2
lead in the opener at the end of
the third, but the Angels kept
picking away at Roy Helser until
the eighth when they took over
the lead with a three-run blast.
Pete Woodend relieved Charley
Cuellar, Cherub starting hurler
in the second and held the
league leaders in check.
Don Osborn applied the white
wash brush to Portland in the
day's finale although he was out
pitched by Don Pulford. Mel

Brooklyn Dodger home attend
ance was over the one-million
mark for the season today, mak
ing Leo Durocher the highest
paid manager in the business.
The Dodgers, who are likely
to top every club in both leagues
in attendance despite the fact
that they are practically out of
the pennant race, drew a crowd
of 18,679 for a single game with
the Giants yesterday. That
brought the home paid attend
ance to 1,000.066 and a $10,000
bonus for Durocher.
Durocher, given a pay cut to
$20,000 last spring, was told by
Branch Rickey, that he would
get $5,000 for each 100.000 in
crease In attendance after the
500,000 mark was reached and
$10,000 when the million mark
came up on the turnstiles. Duro
cher now stands to receive $55,
000 for the year's work.

of the Rogue River Valley golf
course, said today entries are
coming in good for the Southern
Oregon amateur golfing cham
pionship which will be played
on the Medford course Aug. 31
through Sept. 3.
Prizes will be awarded for the
following: Champion, runner-up,
low medalist in the qualifying
round, winner and runner-up in
all fights, winner and runner-up
in the consolation of all flights
except the championship and
first flights.

possibility today that "Meet me
in St. Louis'' will be the theme
song for the 1945 World Series.
For their forlorn fans who
have given up early season high
hopes that the Cardinals and
Browns would meet In another
one-park classic it is well to con
sider the following:
1. Currently they are the hot
test clubs in their leagues. The
Cards, riding a six game victory
streak, the last three over the
leading Cubs, have won 18 out
of 24 games. The Browns, cli
maxing a four game streak with
Sunday double header victory
over the White Sox, have won
18 out of 23.
2. Pitching, key department In
a stretch drive, Is brilliant on
both teams. The Cards have held
the leading National league bat
ters, the Cubs, to two runs in
three games. Rookie Ken Burk
hardt, a 15-game winner, com
pleted a string of 34 scoreless
innings before the Cubs finally
ended It. Ted Wilks and Sylves
ter Donnelly of the Cards have
recovered from arm ailments
and will be ready to pitch when
the team returns home. For the
Browns, Al Holllngsworth, strict
ly a liability last season, and
Nelson Potter, a disappointment
this year until recent weeks,
each have won five straight
games.
3. Both have reputation! for
gameness in the stretch. In five
out of eight years the Cards have
won the pennant they have done
it late in the season. The Browns
put on a fine stretch drive last
summer to beat the Tigers, win
ning their only pennant on the
last day.
