A GLASS OF WINE FOR GRANDMA
The exact amount of ale or
wine Dr. Osier urged his moth
er to take, when he was at the
pinnacle of his
fame and the
In her eighties
doesn't matter.
What matters
is Mrs. Osier's
reply. "No, no,
Willie, I can't
take it I'm
afraid I might
get the habit."
And Willie, be
ing a good doc
tor, let it go at
that.
Brady
Now I advise elderly folk to
take a glass of ale or beer or a
glass of wine once or twice
day, to make life plcasanter for
themselves and for those who
have to live with them. Per
haps I should say I approve of
such use of beer, ale or wine
by elderly folk.
Oh, all right. If you do not
like the idea of taking ale, beer
or wine, don't take it. I don't
like it myself, but then, I'm only
a young fellow and my health
is so good that I'd rather not
dull my sense of well being even
a little with alcohol. So I'm still
a rabid teetotaler, but that is
neither here nor there.
I cannot tell you just how old
one should be before one begins
to take ale, wine or beer. Fifty,
sixty, seventy my playmate.
Dr Is In the latter part
of the ninth decade but still not
old enough to require a solvent.
The best I can suggest is this:
No one, in my opinion, is old
enough to need this solvent aid
until he or she is past fifty. Cer
tainly no youth can legitimate
ly claim his or her well being
requires the narcotic help of al
cohol.
Dr. Arnold Lorand, in his
book "Life Shortening Habits
and Rejuvenation" (published by
F. A. Davis Co., Phila., 1925)
gave his view of the question
as follows:
"For daily use, if one does
not prefer in the interest of
longevity to entirely renounce
alcoholic beverages, two small
glasses of wine or low alcohol
NEW MO COSTS
Washington, Aug. 24 (.?)
The car-hungry public will know
next Monday or Tuesday how
much new automobiles will cost,
but meantime, indications are
that the prices will be higher
than in 1941.
The office of price administra
tion is now putting the finishing
touches on the new ceiling
prices. OPA Chief Chester
Bowles said they would be made
public on the first or second day
of next week.
BowIps dodged n e w s m e n's
questions for a specific hint of
the new car prices but he denied
Detroit reports that the forth
coming ceiling would be 14.4 per
cent above 1942 levels. He gave
strong indication, however, that
1941 would be the base year in
figuring the new prices.

content, or a glass of beer. Is
enough. It would not become one
preaching moderation to recom
mend more than that amount.
It is better still, of course, if
people can be so brought up from
childhood that they will not feel
the need of such stimulants."
Don't take Ol' Doc Lorand too
seriously about that. "Stimu
lants" my eye. Narcotic U the
word and the only honest word
for alcoholic beverage or liquor
or its effect.
Bringing up may be good
enough in some instances to as
sure such good health that the
child or youth or young adult
will not feel the need of alcohol,
but hardly the bringing up that
most kids get in homes and
schools where physical educa
tion is carefully ignored or neg
lected. I tell you, stupid, the
young person who has vlte feels
just fine and dandy and has no
need and no use for alcohol or
dope to enable him or her to get
the greatest enjoyment out of
life. It is your mollycoddled,
flabby, weak, pampered, mal
nourished, poorly educated boy
or girl who resorts to alcohol to
benumb his or her inner con
sciousness of inferiority.
