"Now that the war Is over , ,
the past week has become the
popular phrase of Oregon jour
nalists, upon which to hang an
arm-length editorial.
California boasts (almost)
450,000 wil be unemployed with
in its borders by mid-November.
This total should attract 50 000
promoters, with Santa Claus
schemes, like $65 at 200.

of a traitorous traitor than eith
er Messrs. Petaln and Laval of
France. Vldkun talked Her; Hit
ler against his better Judgment,
to invade his native land. He
capitalized' his hatred of Britain
at $40,000 per month. He was,
with all his other faults a greedy

Do You Prefer Suicide?
It has been said that opportunity knocks at the
door but once.
We fear the old adage will apply to this discovery
of the atomic bomb. ,
For the more one learns about it, the more appar
ent it becomes that here for the first time in human
history the opportunity to secure world peace with
comparative ease, has been offered.
HTHE bomb is very difficult and expensive to make
unlike weapons based on gunpowder it will
therefore never come into general use.
But hand it over to the United Nations, restrict its
use to the' enforcement of peace, and where would
there be a nation, or group of nations, that would
ever dare to break the peace?
And isn't it reasonable to believe every civilized
nation desirious of peace would- join the League for
its own protection
AS to the nations outside of the League, and not
" desirous of peace, how eager would they be to
tackle the League s atomic power even if they had
solved the secret of the bomb 7
They might do great damage for a short period
but it would mean their complete annihilation.
fXN the other hand if this action is NOT taken, and
the nations of the world, through motives of riv
alry, selfishness and fear, enter into atomic bomb
competition, as they entered into armament compe-
tions in the past, not only will world peace he im
possible, but human existence, on this mundane
sphere also at least as it has been in the past.
Here then is the opportunity.
Are the people on this earth so bereft of not only
intelligence but so insulated to what is supposed to
be the strongest human instinct, that of self-preservation
as to fail to take advantage of it?
If the reactions to the proposal hereabouts are at
all typical of the world at large, they ARE!
It Was Not "Unconditional"
Just to keep the record straight:
In spite of the obvious facts, "unconditional sur
render" zealots continue to insist Japan surrendered
UNCONDITIONALLY.
Even the United States state department so main
tains.
How can ANYONE deny that this is precisely
what Japan did NOT do?
AT Potsdam the 3 Great Powers demanded the im-
rvi rt al i n f a. e 1 1 ii r m A tP Tonnn c i-Mi1-1 Y n rtrYYt I
pletely destroyed.
In answer to that demand Japan declared she
would surrender on ONE CONDITION: that the in
tegrity of the Emperor of Japan would not be impaired.

watered space, is coming up , that is the domestic authority of the Emperor is the
buiiheadediy and bravely in theVerv cornerstone of Japan's national existence spiri-
mlddle of his concrete frontyard .., '

It was less important, but still important to the
government of this country, for in many quarters
throughout the land, the head of the Japanese Em
peror had been demanded very much as the hang
ine of the Kaiser had been demanded by England in
1918.
IN FACT as all will recall there were some promi-
nent members of the U. S. government who be
lieved that because of this condition the acceptance
of the Japanese offer would be denied.
But they were wrong. It was not denied.
In fact the retention of the Emperor was the cor
nerstone of the entire acceptance, the Emperor be
ing designated as the authority to receive the allied
terms and transmit them to his people.
IT IS becoming move and more apparent in fact, that
but for the services of the Emperor, the task of
persuading the Japanese generals in foreign lands
with their huge armies largely intact to surrender.
would have been a gigantic task if not an impossible
one.
And yet this talk continues of "unconditional sur
render.
What Is a Fascist?
In leftish circles the term Fascist is an epithet.
It is usually accompanied by a sneer and applied
to anyone and everyone who dares criticize commun
ism or Communists. And this is especially true of
those who have the temerity to maintain that Soviet
Kussia is not accurately represented by a plaster cast
of Generalissimo Stalin, with a prayer book in one
hand, a crucifix m the other, and a halo over his head.
In short the term is very looselv and inaccurately
employed. So we are pleased to note the War De
partment recently issued an official definition of
what a Fascist that is the American type really is.

Fascism Is government by the few for the few. The
American Fascist poses as a 1U0' American and Fascists:
I. Pit religious, racial and economic groups against
each other In order to break down national unity.
II. Can't tolerate the brotherhood of man or Interna
tional cooperation, both of which contradict the theory of
the master race.
III. Indiscriminately pin tho label "red" on people and
proposals they oppose.
THE rpenders thus are having
a difficult time trying to
make out the hopeless case ne
cessary to get themselves more
'rce government money. La
Guardia further claimed "Con
gress has dine nothing." a claim
any congressman can explode to
full ridiculousness by adding up
the $27 200,000 000 in the soend-
ing program already authorized
mainly by them.
Tho wilting little flower, who
apparently is generating some
hopes for personal but not pa
triotlc national revival, also ad
monished citizens not to spend
their money and thus furnish
Jobs but to keep their bonds
and nuv as little as possible. This
seems to be a defeatist policy
generated by motives beyond my
imagimtion or ability to reason
That kind of advice would force
people out of lobs and create
unemployment.
Senators Wa?ner and Murray
(who are not the two unidenti
fied senators quoted at the out
let, but generally working along
the C. I. O. road with LaGuar
dia) came out of the White
House conference saying Mr.
Truman favored their bill to
!ive every man a government
Job If he does not find another
one (cost unestlmated) and boost
the unemployment compensa
tion. However other senators
say privately Mr. Truman inher
ited this program from Mr.
Roosevelt and thought he should
go a'.org with it. They noted
that so far he has not, however,
joined the LaGuardia-C. I. O. de
pression stampede.
Conequently it may be wise
to await developments.
