FOR COMING YEAR
School children throughout
Jackson county are assured ex
cellent lunch programs during
the coming school year through
the efforts of the community
canning groups. Griffin Creek is
an outstanding example of the
progress that has been made to
ward Integrating the school
lunch with the educational pro
gram in the school and commun
ity according to Miss Marian
Farrell, horn a demonstration
agent.
Every Thursday at 9 a. m.
mothers and friends from the
Griffin Creek district meet in
the new kitchen at the school to
can fruit or prepare vegetables
for the freezing unit. When Miss
Farrell visited the group last
week she found the women pre
paring string beans for freezing.
The group included Mesdames
Sarah Judy, Monte Muir, Ethel
Guches, Geacil Miller and Marie
Clogston. Mrs. Judy, chairman,
reported that still more help was
needed and urged that all wom
en In the district contact her or
come to the school Thursday
mornings prepared to' help.
To date the group has canned
119 quarts of cherries, 68 pints
apricots, 20 quarts applesauce
and prepared 65 pounds of string
beans for the locker. Corn,
peaches, tomatoes and pears still
to be done Indicate the great
need for extra assistance, Miss
Farrell said.
Most of the food canned for
the school lunch represents sur
plus from home and commercial
gardens. In every district the
plea is made for more produce.
Miss Farrell urges anyone hav
ing surpluses to contact the local
school group or her office and
arrangements can be made for
its preservation.
Miss Farrell cited the Griffin
Creek school as a typical ex
ample of the progress that can
be made through community co
operation. Mrs. Ethel Guches
who has been working with the
program for many years reports
that three years ago the lunch
program consisted of a hot drink I
and that this year children will
have a complete lunch served in
new and attractive lunchroom.
