    y Seattle Whacks Portland
Lead With 3 To 1 Victory
By United Proit
Farmer Hal Turpin and the
veteran Ad Liska hooked up in
a pitcher's duel Thursday night
in Vaughan Street Park and Tur
pin and the Seattle Rainiers won
out 3-1, to cut the Portland
Beavers' Pacific Coast baseball
league lead to six games. '
Down in the middle of the
league standings, San Francisco
broke a fourth-place tie with an
8-0 victory over Oakland; Sacra
mento defeated San Diego, 6 2,
and Los Angeles bunched all
their scoring in three innings to
pummel Hollywood, 8-4.
Sudi Hold Edge
The Rainiers' victory gave
them a 2-1 edge In their current
series. 1
Turpin had Portland shut out
until the ninth inning when
Frank Shone singled and moved
over to third on a double. He
scored on an infield out. Seattle
drew first blood in the opening
stanza on Bob Gorbould's hit,
Hal Patchett's double and an in
field out.
Patchett's hitting figured in
all the Seattle runs. In the
third he singled again and
promptly stole second and took
third on another hit. He came
across on a wild throw to the
plate.
In the seventh his third single
scored Turping with the final
Suds' marker.
Jim Tobin Sold To
Detroit Tigers In
Surprising Change
New York, Aug. 10 (U.R)
Jim Tobin brought his tantaliz
ing "crawl ball" to the Detroit
Tigers today in an effort to in
sure them the American League
pennant.
Tobin, whose slow-stuff made
him one of the most bewildering
pitchers in the National League,
was waived out surprisingly yes
terday by the Boston Braves
who seemed to have no further
use for him.
Although the big right-hander
won 18 games last year, he had
failed to round into top form
this season and had won only
nine while losing 14. However,
a change of uniform has helped
a number of other players this
year and the Tigers gambled
$7,500 that it would help him.
Rye, N. Y., Aug. 10 (U.R)
Spry Shirley Fry, a 17-year-old
from Akron, 0 who broke
through the ranks of the favor
ites, goes into the quarter-finals
of the eastern grass court tennis
championships today with a
chance to prove that the only
upset in 40 matches was no
fluke.
Miss Fry moved up in the twi
light yesterday with a hard won
7-5, 6-8, 6-2 triumph over sea
soned Dorothy May Bundy of
Santa Monica, Cal., today she
must face Mrs- Sarah Paifrey
Cooke of Los Angeles, national
women's singles champion in
1941, who is seeking to use the
Rye tournament as a spring
board for another victory in the
blue ribbon classic at Forest
Hills, N- Y., later in the month.

10 RETAIN LEAD
New York, Aug. 10 (U.R)
The Detroit Tigers, who have
been in first place continuously
since June 12, had to win to stay
up there yesterday, but the man
ner in which they beat the Bos
ton Red Sox, 11 to 5, at Detroit
gave their supporters a lot of en
couragement. Generally weak
kneed in their hitting of late, the
Bengals battered Red Sox pitch
ers for 15 safe blows and after
successive four-run innings in
the third and fourth, had the
game salted away.
It was "welcome back" for
Manager Joe McCarthy of the
Yankees who was greeted with a
3 to 2 victory over the Indians at
Cleveland after he returned
from a two-week illness. He saw
one of his pre-war pitchers,
Charley (Red) Ruffing, chalk up
his third victory since leaving
the army.
Chisox Lose
Washington went after two
Chicago pitchers for 14-hits and
beat the White Sox, 7 to 2. The
climas came in the fifth when
five hits produced six runs.
Al (Boots) Holling'sworth of
the Browns, outduelled Bobo
Newsom of the Athletics at St.
Louis, winning 1 to 0.
Dodgers Gain Ground
The third place Dodgers gain
ed ground in the national with a
twin win over the Reds at
Brooklyn, 9 to 2 and 4 to 3.
An ex-teammate slowed down
the hot Cubs at Boston where
Big Bill Lee pitched the Braves
to a 7 to 3 victory, beating Paul
Derringer in a battle of veterans.
Cards Near Top
The Cardinals moved within
five and a half games of the lead
with a 5 to 3 victory over the
Giants at New York.
Ken Gables, Pirate rookie,
won his seventh game against
one defeat at Philadelphia, beat
ing the Phils, 3 to 1, giving up
five hits.

Salmon fishing at Gold Beach
is fair but steelhead fishing with
flies is excellent, according to
reports received from Frank D.
Colvin. Anglers are getting
catches all along the river and
fish run from one to six pounds.
Colvin said he landed 18 steel
head this week on size eight
Royal Coachman flies. In upper
stretches of Rogue river salmon
are settling in spawning beds
but steelhead fishing is getting
good with eggs as best bait.
Crappies and Blue Gills are
easily caught at Hiati Lake
while bass fishing is only fair.
Big catfish are being taken on
worms.
Water at Squaw Lake is still
high for good trout fishing but
catfish are providing good sport, i
Roads are said to be rougn Dut
passable.
From the few reports drifting
in from Four Mile Lake the
steelhead are said to be strik
ing fast on a troll but care should
be taken in driving car in over
the bad road from Fish Lake.
Trolling is poor at Diamond
Lake while bait fishing is only
fair. Fly angling is really tops
during most of the day, espec
ially in rippling water. Most any
dark fly will get results.
Various areas in the county
are closed because of the ex
treme fire hazard. The areas
are well posted by the forest
service and anyone violating
the closure is subject to heavy
penalty.
Among streams closed in Jack
son county are Jenny Creek on
west side from the Oregon-California
line to Klamath river.
Keene Creek, Beaver Creek and
Sampson creek are all closed.
Parts of Butte creek and parts
of the north and south forks are
also in the closed area. Parts of
the south and middle fork of
Rogue river, Beaver Dam creek.
Grave ' creek, Evans creek and
part of Trail creek and its tri
butaries are closed to fishing.
Sportsmen are advised to check
with the forest service if plan
ning a trip to an out-of-the-way
stream.
Ashland and Medford, tradi
tional rivals in every sport for
many years, will clash in a
Southern Oregon league base
ball game at the Fairgrounds
Park Sunday afternoon, begin
ning at 2:30. Ashland is still
smarting under the 17 to 6 lac-;
ing the Craters handed them at
Ashland earlier in the season I
and will be out to erase the blot. :
Hopes of the Lithians will do-;
pend largely on the effectiveness
of Jack Douglas against the Med
ford club. Douglas has been po- j
tent against almost every club
he has faced since joining the
Ashland aggregation but whe
ther he can outsmart Medford
batsmen remains to be seen. j
Crater boss Paul Freer has not
decided who will oppose Ash
land on the rubber but indicates
it will be either Dick Fawcctt or !
Dick Kidwell. Jess Van Horn's
sore arm is healing rapidly but
it is doubtful if he will pitch, if
he is not desperately needed. j

followed under the leadership of
Earl Browder during the past
19 months.
The constitution has drawn up
at the national convention here
two weeks ago which reconsti

for 15 years, earlier had been re
placed by a three-man secretariat
