BACK HOI FOR
Gallant Vessel Badly Dam
aged in Typhoon Which
Caught Fleet Off Okinawa
By Courtenay Moor
United States Correspondent
Washington, Aug. 7 (U.R)
The aircraft carrier Hornet,
which has sunk or damaged
about 1,270,000 tons of Japanese
shipping and destroyed 1,410
planes, is back home for repair
but it took a typhoon to get
her back. The Japanese never
touched her.
The 27,000-ton Essex class car
rier, named in honor of the ship
which took the first American
fliers to Tokyo in 1942, went
through 14 months of battle
packed action in the Pacific be
fore putting in at San Francisco
for repairs and a rest.
Damage List Long
During that period, the Hornet
and her fliers inflicted the fol
lowing damage on the enemy:
668 planes shot down; 742 planes
destroyed on the ground; one
carrier, one cruiser, 10 destroy
ers and 42 cargo ships sunk; and
an "assist" in the sinking of the
battleship Yamato.
The Horent is scheduled to be
ready for sea again in three
weeks, in time to participate in
the final assault against the Jap
anese homeland. Her repairs
have been estimated at a cost of
$2,200,000.
The Hornet had been through
one typhoon in the Philippines,
but the typhoon of June 5
which damaged many other
American warships bounced
her around like a chip. The 120
knot gales caught the Hornet
150 miles east of Okinawa at 2
a. m.
Flight Deck Folds
Suddenly her bow rose atop
a tremendous wave and crashed
downward with such force that
the forward corners of the flight
deck folded down along her
sides. She was forced to retire
from the battle area and head
home.
The Japanese tried hard to get
the fighting ship, but her score
of enemy planes shot down Indi
cates the futility of their at
tempts. As a part of the famed task
force 58, and flagship of Rear
Adm. J. J. "Jocko" Clark, the
Hornet hammered the Japanese
in every major action from the
March, 1944 strikes on the Pal
aus through the Okinawaw oper
ation. The ship has had three skip
pers and three air groups in her
short but busy life. She set what
is believed to be a record for
carriers by destroying 255 Japa
nese planes in a 30-day period,
between March 18 and April 16,
1945. In a single day's operation,
she accounted for 67 Japanese
planes.
FROM BAY 10
Love Point, Md., Aug 7 (U.R)
Glenn L. Martin Co. engineers
began preparations today to
raise the Hawaii Mars, world's
largest airplane, from the Ches
apeake Bay where it sank Sun
day during a high-speed emer
gency landing.
None of the 10 men abdard
the big, 72V4 ton flying boat was
injured seriously when loss of a
vertical stabilizer interrupted a
test flight and forced her down
near Love Point, across the bay
from the naval academy at
Annapolis.
The Impact or the izo-mne an
hour landing cracked open the
hull and the big ship began
sinking. The water was only
about 25 feet deep, however, and
the tail and tip of one wing re
mained above the surface.
Veteran test pilot William E.
Coney, who was at the controls,
told the United Press that his in
strument panel blacked out after
the ship lost the staoiuzer ai
about 7,000 feet.

MYOPIA IS NEA
The literal meaning of myopia
is wink or .half close the eyes.
Common terms for it are near-
a 1 g htedn ess
and shortsight
edness. It is a
c o n d 1 tion in
which, in con-
t e q u e nee of
e 1 o ngatton of
the globe of
the eye, paral
lel rays of light
are focussed in
front of the re
tina or sensi
tive film at the
Dr. Bradf baclt of the
eye. Hence the myopic child or
young adult does not see distant
things clearly and squints or
half closes the eyes in the effort
to shorten the eyeball and bring
parallel rays to a focus nearer
the retina.
The length (front to back) of
the globe of the eye depends
primarily on the shape of the
skull. Thus individuals and
races with long (front to back)
and comparatively narrow (ear
to ear) head (dolichocephalic)
are more likely to be nearsighted
than are individuals or races
with short and comparatively
wide or broad head. Tor ex
ample the typical Teuton peering
through thick lens spectacles, or
the typical Indian seeing so
clearly things at a great distance
without any artificial aid.
To the extent that the shape of
the skull is transmitted myopia
is hereditary, or the tendency to
develop nearsightedness is- But
it is only rarely congenital (pre
sent at birth), developing gener
ally when the child is eight or
10 years old-
If the child inherits a long (do
lichocephalic) shape of skull, no
matter how near-sighted one or
both parents may be the child
does not necessarily develop my
opia of suficient degree even to
require glasses. But whether or
not serious near-sightedness de
velops, at 10, 20 or 30 years, de
pends largely upon these factors:
1. The amount of strain of
the eyes, either from overuse of
the eyes in childhood and early
youth in reading, studying and
other close work, or from poor
lighting.
2. Nutritional deficiency and
frail health (lack of vite).
3. Prescribing or proscribing
of glasses by any one who is not
a physician.
4. The amount of open air
activity, play, exercise, sport or
work the child gets in the 'teens.
In talks to follow I'll discuss
these factors in practical detail
Many growing children with
unrecognized myopia are handi
capped in school because they
do not see the blackboard writ
ing as well as do children with
normal vision, and too often this
is wrongly interpreted as "inat
tention," "dullness," "poor ap
plication" or "stupidity" when
in truth the child's mind Is nor
mal but the lighting In the
schoolroom Is inexcusably bad
ana ine medical inspection of the
pupils, if any, is worth just about
what it costs per pupil per year.

Answer Nicotinic acid (entity of
vitamin B complex) has nothing to do
with nicotine. Because of the misun
derstanding due to similarity in names
the authorities have discarded the old
name and now call this vitamin niacin
instead of nicotinic acid.
