OF 361 REGIMENT
As memorial to the men of
the 91st Division's 381st Infan
try regiment who fell In
battle in Italy a marble and
bronze monument is being con
structcd on a knoll overlooking
highway 63 near LIvergnano,
scene of some of the bitterest
fighting of the Italian campaign,
according to word from the
Fifth Army headquarters.
Col. R. W. Broedlow of Med
ford, regimental commander,
conceived the plan, and
the monument will be con
structed with $4,500 subscribed
by men of the regiment, and
placed on land given by the
Italian civilians of the Commune
of Pianoro.
Workmen are now cutting the
polishing stone for the memorial
from quarries at Bcveno, near
Verona, and construction Is ex
pected to be completed in Sep
tember Site of the monument
is between Predosa and La For
tuna. commanding a view of Mt.
Adonc and other sectors where
troops of the 361st spearheaded
the advance of the Fifth army
last autumn.
The 20 foot shaft will be
cream colored marble, Inscribed
with the regimental coat of
arms, the division's Fir Tree em-
blem, and the caption, "To Our
Heroic Dead." Base of the mon
ument, 18 feet square, will be of
black granite, and inscribed on
the sides will be a list of the
battles in which the regiment
participated during the Italian
campaign. At the bottom of the
shaft, a 01st Division soldier.
FOUR TRANSPORTS BRING
SOLDIERS FROM EUROPE
New York, Aug. 7 (U.R)
Four transports arrive from
Europe today bringing 3,029
troops.
The main body of the 109th
regiment of tha 28th (Keystone)
division was among 2,072 troops
arriving on the transport Mor-
macport.
Also aboard the Mormacport
were the 308th and 310th mill
tary police escort guard detach
ments and the 103rd medical bat
talion. The transport Edward Bellamy
carried three troops, the Adula
brought 52 and the American
Farmer had two.

poration plans to start canning
Elberta peaches tomorrow after
noon. The peaches are being
shipped here from California
The valley has a light crop of
peaches and it will be the last
of the month before the Hales
and Elbertas are ready. A
goodly portion of the peach pack
goes to the military services.
First peach-plums of the sea
son, grown in the Phoenix area,
reached the local stores yester
day.
The packing corporation plant
will also can plums and pears
later and will freeze some prod
uce. The plant will can around
1,HU0 tons of Bartlete pears, as
sured them by packers and grow
ers here, twice as much valley
Bartletts as were canned last
year.
