Dr. Brady states that
cleaning the teeth is merely a
waste of time and money.
Now, I wouldn't mind that in
itself. What irks me is the way
the dentist reacted.
If there is a physician, a den
tist or a health authority in
America who has more consist
ently and vigorously urged upon
the public the desirability and
importance of regular care (in
cluding "phophylaxis" or clean

than I have, I challenge the den
tists to name him.
Though it seems to please no
body, neither the dentist nor the
patient nor the vendor of glori

been vainly shouting against the
cacophony of snarls, boos and
catcalls ever since I quit brush

much you brush "em or what
type of detergent you use as den

only one way you can keep your

THE WHOLE TRUTH
childish you should have a
guardian.
Lest what I have said convey
some misapprehension of the
meaning of prophylaxis or pro
phylactic treatment by the den
tist, let me emphasize that the
main purpose and value of reg
ular prophylaxis lies not so
much in the thorough scaling
polishing and cleaning but in the
opportunity this gives the den
tist to discover minute cavities
of fissures and treat them before
serious damage is done by the
progress of decay or carles.
When all we know at present
about health and longevity is
weighed, I doubt, if there Is e
better way to invest ten or twen
ty bucks than in annual prophy
laxis by the dentist.

LONG PERIOD OP
Most of State's Income Tax
Revenues Will Go To Off
set 1 946 Property Taxes
By Eric W. Allen, Jr.
United Preis Staff
Correspondent
Salem, Ore., Aug. 3 (U.R)
Chances are that 1944-45 was
the last fiscal year In a long time
during which Income taxpayers
in Oregon will not have to pay
full amount of the income tax
levy.
Two years ago there was a 75
per cent discount on the amount
to be paid, last year it was 30
per cent, and the state tax com
mission announced this week
that there would be no forgive
ness on income taxes for the
current year.
To Offset Property Tax
The commission, following a
conservative policy, estimated
total income tax revenues, as of
June 30, 1946, would amount to
$28,491,548. Most of this will
go to offset property taxes.'
Total requirements of the
state government, which if there
were no income tax would be
paid by property levies, has
been adjusted to total $24,372,
335. The commission, in com-
piling the list of requirements.
found that something would
have to be cut, or requirements
might exceed income, if income
estimates were high.
So two cuts were made one
the $3,000,000 state and county
school fund, and the other the
rebate payment to taxpayers,
both of which were at the bot
tom of the preferred list of re
quirements payable.
This is the way the property
levy figures out:
State levy inside six per cent
limitation, $5,992,927.
Higher education millage out
side six per cent limitation,
$1,366,543.
World war veterans aid,
W mill, $542,297.
Veterans loan millage (1945)
1 mill, $1,084,558.
Veterans education, (1945)
210 mill, $216,912.
State building fund (June
election) $5,000,000.
Elementary school fund (two
mills), $2,169,116.
Total state levy, $16,372,335.
Plus state school support fund,
$8,000,000.
Total property levy, $24,372,
335. This total represents what
must be paid for out of Income
taxes. The tax commission es
timated that this amount, and
no more, can be taken care of
safely by receipts, leaving a
probable carry-over surplus of
about $4,119,213 at the end of
the year. This carry-over, how
ever, cannot be counted upon
without question.
Because, with income taxes:
due to drop, and the additional :
burden of the $5,000,000 build
ing fund, the $3,000,000 addi
tional to the school support
