CUPID CLUB FOR
THOSE WITH COIN
Lansing, Mich., July 25 U.R)
Jackson State Prison inmates
have converted the world's larg
est penitentiary into a virtual
"cupid club for the lovelorn"
with dope, liquor and special
privileges for those who could
pay, Attorney General John R.
Dethmers charged today.
Dethmers' findings were con
tained in a sensational 30-count
indictment of the prison's admin
istration, concluding a four
month investigation of activities
at Jackson.
The report said that some in
mates were permitted the solace
of wives and sweethearts in
screened hospital beds.
Taken on Parties
Others were transported by
prison employes to houses of
prostitution in Jackson or taken
on wild week-end parties with
women at resort cottages owned
by prison officials, Dethmers
said.
Price for admittance to the
hospital "love nest" was $1, pay
able to the attending nurse, the
report alleged.
-.Dethmers charged that there
was no control of sex perversion
and he reported finding moral
degenerates placed together in
sections of the prison where
their passions vere virtually un
checked. The report cited Warden
Harry Jackson as responsible for
"hampering the investigation"
by telling inmates they did not
have to testify to state examin
ers and that "something would
be done for them after this blows
over" if they refused to talk.
Jackson has served as warden
15 years in three different terms
since 1925. He was in Lansing
as the report was issued, but re
fused comment.
In addition to' interference
with the Investigation, prison
officials were charged by Deth
mers with entertaining privi
leged inmates in their own
homes for dinner, weddings and
"hilarious parties from which
they returned to the prison at
two and three o'clook in the
morning in a drunken condi
tion." JURY DUTY SHIRK
E
Portland, Ore., July 25 CJ.R)
Mrs. Margaret S. Myers, who
sidestepped federal jury duty to
attend to her work as president
of the women s auxiliary of the
Rural Mail Carriers' Association
of America, was fined $25 today
for contempt of court.
Judge James Alger Fee ad
monished Mrs. Myers for shirk
ing her patriotic duty in war
time but said the fine would be
refunded if she reports for duty
August 6 and serves the rest of
the term.
Mrs Myers lives at St. Helens,
Ore, and is a former school
teacher. She explained in court
she had a plane itinerary sched
uled for visits to western chap
ters of her association, and be
lieved she had excused herself
from' jury duty by swearing to
a statement of unavailability be
fore a Notary Public and mailing
it to the court.
Judge Fee declared her asso
ciation work "had nothing to do
with winning the war" and that
since executives of high and low
rank, labor leaders and the gen
eral run of citizens had respond
ed to jury summons although
"inconvenienced," Mrs. Myers
should have taken her jury call
more seriously. He added she
should have appeared before the
court to be excused.
Plunge Into Pool
Fails to Help Con
Salem, Ore., July 25 (U P.)
A plunge into the prison farm
swimming pool yesterday, to j
avoid the eyes of guards hunting i
him, didn't help George Earl I
Wood, 20, any, and he was back
under lock and key today in the
penitentiary after about five
hours of "freedom.
The young prison inmate, who
was serving two years for bur
glary, escaped from a prison
farm flax gang yesterday. He
was found not long after by
Everett Kaiser, state farmer,
near the pool after his unsuccess
ful swim.

VITAMIN D FOR GH
Rickets is a nutritional defi
ciency disease, to be sure, but in
the popular sense of the term
"disease u is

child or youth
with rickets is
not obviously
ill or sickly
but just retard
ed in growth
and develop
ment, or more

Dr. Brady knock - kneed,
bow-legged, flat-footed, sway
backed, pot-bellied, droop shoul
dered, weak ankled, fatigue
postured and, of course, constant
ly or constitutionally tired and
soft.
Unfortunately the popular no
tion of rickets is that it affects
the bones. This notion is prob
ably shared by some physicians
who have never learned to rec
ognize nutritional deficiency
manifestations in the early stages
or mild degrees just as many
old timers never learned to rec
ognize lung tuberculosis while
it was in the incipient stage, be
fore the patient developed cav
ity and actual consumption.
Rickets affects the teeth, car
tillages, nerves, muscles, diges
tive organs, teeth, tonsils and
blood as much as it affects the
bones-rthe bone manifestations
are just more obvious to the cas
ual observer than are the other
manifestations of rickets. Yes,
and to some physicians, too. The
122 children out of 230 examined
postmortem had rickets but none
of them died of rickets they
died from various acute illness
not related to or in any way due
to rickets. '
Except in infancy and even
in the baby rickets usually be
comes evident only after the ba
by is from six to eighteen
months old rickets Is neither
recognized nor prevented or
treated in most instances, simply
because the child or youth does
not come under medical care or,
if some accident or casual illness
brings the child under medical
observation the physician fails
to take cognizance of and offer
any advice about the underlying
nutritional deficiency.
Phophylaxis or prevention of
rickets and all of its serious con
stitutional manifestations is so
simple that it seems shameful it
is denied to or withheld from so
many children in their develop
ing, formative years. It consists
of these essentials;
1. Adequate daily intake of high
calcium, high - phosphorous
foods particularly milk and
milk products, butter, eggs,
greens, peas, beans, peanuts,
other nuts.
2. Greatest possible exposure of
skin to sunlight, within rea
sonable limitations.
3. Optimal daily intake of vita
min D that is, two or three
times as much as nutrition
authorities deem necessary to
prevent rachitic manifesta
tions. In. the booklet "V-I-T-E Spells
Youth" for copy send ten cents
and stamped self addressed en
velope you will find set forth
the reasons why the way in
whlchi every growing child
should cat his or her daily ration
of vitamin D and B-complex
along with breakfast or with
lunch or dinner as preferred. Not
that rickets is bound to occur if
the child does not so supplement
the ordinary diet, but, in my
opinion, this prophylaxis posi
tively favors the development of
straightcr, stronger, healthier.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Absorbing Sunshine
Our whole family Is what you might
call a cult of sun worshippers. Our
two children have always run with as
few clotnes as the law will allow. The
rest of us bask In the sunshine as
much as the law and tho neighbors
sense nf propriety will allow. Some
one tells my husband that after the
alein becomes well tanned It will not
absorb any more health giving rays as
it becomes too tough. . (S. J.)
Answer Tanned skin Is not tough
er, in fact it is softer, smoother, of
finer texture, healthier in every re
spect than skin that has not been ex
posed to the sun. It still absorbs plen
ty of ultraviolet, though perhaps not
so much as it did w.hen exposed be
fore it had become tanned. But then,
you don't need so much vitamin D
now that you have absorbed ao much
ultraviolet and stored so much vlos
terol. All you need now is a mainten
ance ration of sunshine dally.
