Merely Historical Fact
How times do change !
Less than nine months ago this country was nearing
the close of an exciting mid-war "political campaign,
and the theme song of that campaign was an old and
familiar one, to wit:
"Don't change horses In the middle of a stream!"
Yes, that phrase in one way or another, was the
chief battle ciy, and there is no doubt, whatever, that
that plea iterated and reiterated was the fundamental
cause of the late President Roosevelt's overwhelming
victory. K ' '
THIS fact has been brought vividly to our attention
4 in glancing over the files of last fall, when the
editorial eye struck a quotation from an article by the
fluent and sapient Dorothy Thompson of which the
following is an extract:
"The charge that the supporters of President Roosevelt
for a fourth term are maintaining this war is a partisan one
has not been sustained. Party is not involved. No one is
urging the electorate to return the Democratic party to power,
but only the Commander-in-Chief of the army and navy at a
very critical stage of an all-out conflict. No one denies this
war Is being fought as valiantly by Republicans as by Demo
crats, but also no one should deny that the successful outcome
of the war transcends all other considerations. Nothing would
so cripple the progress of that war, or so hearten the forces

the war was not an issue, that the war was running in
high, under excellent professional guidance both at
home and abroad, had achieved such momentum it
would go on to a successful conclusion whether Pres
ident Roosevelt was re-elected, or was not.
In the same issue, in fact, we quoted Governor
Dewey's pledge regarding the war, and made what we
thought at the time was a fairly strong case for voting
AGAINST a fourth term at the approaching election.

THE people of Jackson county so voted in fact. But
the people of the state and the country did not
emphatically not, to the tune of A6z to i)9 electoral
votes!
Now we .have no wish to call up unpleasant
memories, or rehash the late and lamented presiden
tial campaign or indulge over much in that irritating
refrain "We told you so!"
But, we hope we may be pardoned for pointing to
a rather obvious fact today, namely, that Miss l nomp
son, as far as her contention regarding the indispens
ible leadership of one man in World War No. II is
concerned has not beeif sustained Dy events.

days after taking office. A decided political change
m the administration has taken place since then. If
as Miss Thompson contended only the individual

of the dire consequences she predicted.

THE point we wish to make is simply this, and noth-

events, and in retrospect must be recorded on the
scroll of political history as an appealing but a phoney
one.
Time may show the loss of Franklin Delano Roose
velt at such a critical time in world history, was a
tragic and costly one, particularly in the direction of
social and political reform, but not in the direction
so often pointed out in the campaign that of the effec

Something about it tugs at the heart strings. Such
a little feller to be sitting there on the big barber's
throne waiting for the ruthless shears to clip off the
hair. Not that it's the first time the very young man
has had his locks clipped. Usually Mother or Father
have done some shearing of the lamb before he goes
to a-real barber's shop.
But the first honest-to-goodness hair cut is a major
event. In a sense it's the end of the first period of
life; it is also the beginning of man's estate. No!
wonder a five-year old man squirms and turns,
wiggles and twists on the dinky little seat hung be-
tween the two arms of the chair. Perhaps something j
tells him that this is a turning point in his career. !

when a boy starts going to the barber shop, he's on
the way to manhood. Many and mysterious arc the

list in importance are the first hairs cut at the i
