BILL DIETRICH
I
New York, July 24 (U.R) It
was simply a well-pitched 1 to 0
victory in 11 innings over the
Yankees but it gave Blinky Bill
Dietrich of the Chicago White
Sox as big a thrill as the no-hit,
no-run garge he twirled back In
1937.
It was a victory of vindication
for the 35-year-old right-hander,
who has been beaten 19 times by
the Yankees during his long
American league career. And it
couldn't have come at a more
opportune time. The bombers
were dropped into the second di
vision for the first time since
mid-June of last season while
Manager Joe McCarthy remain
ed away from the club, contem
plating his resignation.
Also helping to "button up
the race were Louis (Bobo) New-
som, the "turnabout" pitcher of
the A s, and unsung Ed Klieman
of the Indians, who knocked off
the leading Tigers and the runner-up
Senators in night games.
Newsom, who has won four
straight games after dropping 12
in a row, topped the Tigers with
a 1-0 four-hit job. -
Klieman pitched and batted
his way to victory, beating the
Senators at Washington, 2 to 1.
The Pirates made 17 hits, in
cluding homers by Jim Russell,
Bob Elliott and Bill .Salked in
an 8 to 5 victory over the Braves
at Pittsburgh. Tommy Holmes,
holder of the new National
league consecutive games bat
ting mark, dropped out of the
lead as top hitter in the Majors
after going hitless in his fourth
straight game. He now has been
at bat 18 straight times without
a hit
There were no other games in
either .league.

Double Birdie
Chalked Up In
Portland Play
Portland, Ore., July 24
(U.R) The golfing rules may
not contain a "double birdie"
but Bob Perry of Portland
certainly scored one in the
City Golf Championship quali
fying round.
His second shot on the 12th
hole hit a robin and killed the
bird.
That was birdie No. 1.
The ball veered out of
bounds, struck a curbing and
bounded back to the fairway,
from where Perry pitched to
the green and sank his putt
for birdie No. 2.
