high frequency station to be in
stalled later, Agers added. The
local station was installed to pro
mote aviation, and expansion be

Air Strip Ready Soon
The air strip adjoining the
navy station will be completed
in 10 days, according to Frank
Rogers, city superintendent, who
said that response to the news
of its construction has come from
all parts of the Pacific coast.
Private airplane owners and na
tional firms have written for
permission to use the landing
strip and to install facilities.
Reporting for the emergency
housing committee, Eugene
Thorndike told the directors that
a housing survey has been near
ly completed in Medford, and 8
billeting office will be opened
soon at the Rogue River bus ter
minal to direct servicemen to
available rooms or apartments.
Manned by army personnel and
a civilian worker, the desk will
be open 24 hours daily. Anyone
wishing to list a vacant room or
apartment is asked to contact
J. A. Early at the Holland Hotel.
Divide On Maters
John Moffat gave results of
a recent poll of 86 Medford busi
ness firms in- which owners were
asked if they favored a parking
meter System on downtown
streets of the city. From the im
partial list. 32 said yes and 31
no, while others were not avail
able or declined comment.
About $33,000 will be paid
local cherry growers for fruit
canned this year at the Rogue
River Canning Co., it was stated
by Al James, company official.
The company, which came into
the valley last year, is carrying
on investigations concerning
quick freezing of valley fruit,
berry and vegetable crops when-
I ever production supplies meet
sufficient volume, freezing oper
ations this year including ap
ples and peaches, James said.
; The cannery pack includes cher-
i ries, apricots, prunes, peaches
and pears.
! Frank Hull, secretary of the
j local chamber, reported on the
I regional meeting of the U. S.
Chamber of Commerce, held in
Portland last week and attended
by 35 representatives from the
area. Points brought out at the
meeting included the expansion
of large industry to smaller cen
ters, in. actual operation now,
and the increase in expansion
expected after the war.
In a survey of 75,000 persons
in all states of the union, Hull
said, Chamber of Commerce of
ficials proved that the education
level and consuming lever of in
dividuals and communities rises
or falls together, the more high
ly educated persons consuming
the most goods of all tyyes.
Introduced as a special guest
at the luncheon by President
Herb Grey was Commander
Louis Gunlher, commander of
the Camp Whito naval hospital,
who spoke briefly. Alfred Coff-
man from the Jacksonville
Chamber of Commerce Was also
introduced.

members will attend the 4-H
camp at Lake O' Woods opening
Monday, according to Earle
Jossy, county 4-H agent. The
camp will close July 28.
A program of work for the
Junior Red Cross, sports and
swimming interspersed with a
few talks on more Serious mat
ters has been planned. A camp-
fire program each evening is ex
pected to be popular with the
club members.
The camp staff will Include
Maryolive Snarr, assistant state
club leader, instructor; Mrs. Mar
vin Poyer, Ashland, instruct;
Mrs. Henry Padgham, Medford,
nurse; Mrs. Eva Kite, Central
Point, water front-direction and
life guard; Mrs. John James,
Medford, head cook; Mrs. Bill
Ferns, assistant cook; Miss Betty
Sue Glover, Medford, dining
room advisor. The camp will be
under the supervision of the
county 4-H club agent, assisted
by Mr. Perry, 4-H club agent at
large. H. C. Seymour, Wm.
Langan and Dan Robinson, all
of Oregon State college will be
at camp a few days to help out
with the program.

Medford city school board or
dered the $199,633.90 tax levy
Friday night to cover the school
budget for the coming fiscal
school year following public
hearing at the office of E. H.
Hedrick, city school-superintendent,
it was announced yesterday.
There was no opposition voiced
at the hearing.
The total budget calls for
$338,152 estimated school expen
ditures, an increase of $35,000
over last year, occasioned by an
11 per cent increase in teachers'
salaries and six additional teach
ers for the coming year, accord
ing to the superintendent. State,
county and other receipts make
up the remaining $159,505.60 of
the budget.
