All this could be made plain to the people and
legally obligatory by appropriate action of congress
AFTER the charter has been ratified as an official
interpretation of same; without a special reservation.
More Wishful Thinking
It would be interesting to have a complete list of
the numbe- of times the complete defeat of Japan has
been declared imminent.
There certainlv have been
one, we can recall was at that famous New Year's
nartv when Admiral (Bull) Halsey declared Japan
would be wiped off the map within a year. That was
three years ago and the fighting Admiral surely made

on land, sea and in the air, because President Tin
man has decided to abandon his tour of Europe and
come home as soon as the Potsdam meeting ends, and
because (we are now quoting News Commentator
Swing) the Emperor of Japan asked the army for air
protection and the army turned him down,
Japan is about to "throw in the towel again!

AND of course Japan may, for as has become a
well worn axiom anything can HAPPEN as well
as be fair in love and war.
But to this department such a beneficent event does
not appear likely, in what might be termed the near
future, say by Christmas day or before.

long as that but it is equally certain as we view
it at least that to foresee her end in the present year
is to be guilty of one of our most popular national ail
ments as f ;fr as war is concerned.
