    Back Injury Keeps Nelson
Out Of St. Paul Tourney
St. Paul, Minn., July 19 (U.R)
It was a great day for the "for
gotten men" of golf today as the
$10,000 St. Paul open got under
way over the rolling Keller
Country Club course.
Byron Nelson of Toledo, O.,
the greatest money monopoly
golfdom has ever known, was
forced to withdraw his entry
due to an Injured back. And
with the Buckeye state's pride
and joy on the sidelines, most of
the game's near champions and
runnerups have their first real
chance at a big money prize in
more than a year.

London, July 19 (U.R) An
American boxing tour was in
prospect today for the new Brit
ish heavyweight champion,
Bruce Woodcock, when and if
he can get leave from his job as
a railroad worker at Doncaster.
There was no immediate Brit
ish title fight in the offing1 be
cause of the dearth of war-time
talent, but his manager Tom
Hurst and Promoter Jack Solo
mons were attempting to work
out some kind of a bout.
Sgt. Billy Conn's name was
mentioned frequently in possible
alignments whereby Woodcock
might eventually get a crack at
the world heavyweight crown
of Sgt. Joe Louis, but British
sports writers were almost unan
imous in their belief that he
isn't ready for either one.
Admittedly head and shoul
ders above any currently avail
able British heavyweight. Wood
cock also was not considered by
American ringside observers to
be a match for either Conn or
Louis.

When Chet Rosenlund report
ed too sick to play in Wednes
day night's game against San
Diego, Manager Billy Raimondi
put Jim Herrera back into the
line-up at third base.
Herrera, who had played less
than 10 games to date this sea
son and who was a regular
Acorn infielder last year, re
warded Raimondi's faith when
his single spoiled Carl Dumler's
chance to enter baseball's hall of
fame with a no-hit game.
Herrera's hit drove in the only
Oakland run while the Padres
went on to triumph 7-1 before
a crowd of 2700 at Emeryville.
Portland trounced Hollywood,
12-4, with Roy Helser on the hill
for the Bevos. Los Angeles cap
tured a doubleheader from Sac
ramento by scores of 5-4 and
6-5. The slipping Seals dropped
their game to Seattle, 7-4, and
now hold fourth place by only
a game over Oakland and three
games over the climbing Angels.
Helser was in control of the
situation against the Stars and
coasted to victory after his team
mates gave him an early 6-1
lead.
The Los Angeles' twin victory
stretched their winning streak
to six games their longest of
the season.
BUTTE FALLS 10
After two weeks away from
home the Medford Craters re
turn to the Fairgrounds Park
Sunday afternoon to play Butte
Falls in a Southern Oregon
league baseball game, starting
at 2:30. The two teams have met
twice this season with Medford
taking 17 to 2 and 9 to 3 wins
over the Loggers, who have
dropped all but one of their
league starts.
Manager Paul Freer was
doubtful who would start the
game on the mound but indicat
ed it may be Dick Kidwell or
Doug "Red" Davis.
Other league games send .Cen
tral Point to Ashland Siinday
and Klamath Falls Marines to
Klamath Falls Navy during the
week. The clash was scheduled
for Sunday but will be played
during the week instead.
