PROSPECTIVE FATHER STAND BY
Well, here we are again, fight
ing to keep the. family a going
concern here where the business
has dropped to an all-time low.
First there is
booie and the
night club and
cocktail evil;
then it is im
p e r a t i ve to
keep up with
the J o n e s es;
and If these
factors fail to
wreck the bus
iness there is
always the
birth "control"
Dr. Brady idea which
I'll discuss in an early issue if
the propagandists let me live
long enough.
I became despondent the other
day when a correspondent, ex
pressing interest in my article
criticising doctors and hospitals
for excluding expectant fathers
from the delivery room, told of
his resentment at being excluded
from the operating room when
his wife was being operated on
for appendicitis he was paying
the bill and he believed that
gave him the . right to see for
himself whether her appendix
was actually removed . . . but I
didn't hang myself, I just threw
things around a bit, stormed out
of the playroom and went over
to the bowling green. There in
two hours and 21 minutes of am
nesia I had my ears pinned back
and by a guest bowler at that
and came home in chastened
spirit, to carry on the fight to
make a man out of the prospec
tive father.
In the preceding talk on this
subject I quoted the objections
a physician practicing gynecol
ogy and obstetrics made against
the presence of the husband or
other relative of the patient in
the delivery room, namely, that
most such rooms are too small
and the husband would be in the
way of doctors and nurses, that
the husband is likely to become
overanxious and demand surgi
cal intervention, and that the
physician has to divert time and
attention from the patient to
keep the husband in hand.
Note that this specialist makes
no allusion to contamination of
the environment and that is
the first objection raised by the
people who run certain hospi
tals, especially by the "men in
white" and the nurses who are
so fond of dramatizing their per
formance, you know, wearing
gowns, wisps of cheesecloth over
their maps and all that show bus
iness. I might be more impressed
by such hokum if I had not seen
so many serious breaches of
aseptic discipline or technique
by "men in white" and by nurses
doing bit parts in the show.
The head nurse or superin
tendent of an obstetric or ma
ternity department in a middle
west hospital contrived to be
quoted in the local paper as not
agreeing with my recommenda
tion that the husband remain
with his wife during delivery.
She said husbands are too likely
to faint at a critical moment and
so . . ,

QUESTIONS ft ANSWERS
llrrpes
What causes "cold sore," that come
around the mouUi, starting with a
blister. (Mrs. K. H.)
Answer Herpes is the medical term.
Cause not positively known, perhaps a
specific infection. Good remedy at on
set of simple herpes is frequent senile
daubing with spirits of camphor. Some
persons subject to frequent herpes
paint tne spot promptly witn collodion.
Pyorrhea
Have you any advice for one who
nas pyorrhea? (Ol. u. .)
Answer Send stamped envelope
bearing your address, for pamphlet
"Pyorrhea. '
Cooklnr
Please inform me whether vitamins
are lost Jn cooking fruits and vege
tables If so, how should such foods be
cooked in order to prevent loss or de
sUuction of vitamins? (Mrs. R. K.)
Answer Quick high heat less de
structive than prolonged moderate
heating. More or less destruction
inevitably occurs in cooking. Consid
erable loss occurs from the not water
dissolving vitamins. Save such vita
mins, and mineral salts likewise dis
solved out of the food by the hot
water, by using the water for soup,
gravy, etc. Try to have at least one
raw vegetable and at least one raw
fruit In each meal. Greens are the
best sources of vitamins and minerals,
any and every kind of green leafy
relish.
