Radar Men Needed
For Naval Service
The continued and ever in
creasing need for more men to
be trained as radio technicians
(radar) in the navy was stressed
today by Chief W. R. Cumley,
recruiter-in-charge of the navy
recruiting station In Medford.
This program is one of the lew
remaining opportunities in the
armed forces that remain open
for a man to be assured of
certain type of military job. Be
ing open to men who are ap
proaching Induction, as well as
-those in the volunteer age

Oregon has gained 2,349 farms
and 1.838.384 acres in farmlands
since 1940, according to prelimi
nary figures for the state com
piled in the 1945 census of agri
culture, the bureau of the cen
sus, department of commerce,
announced today.
The number of farms in the 38
Oregon counties increased by 3.9
percent, from 61,829 in 1940 to
64,268 in 1945; farm acreage in
creased by 10.2 percent, from
17.988.307 acres in 1940 to IB
826,691 acres ii 1945, and aver
age size of farms increased by
6 percent, from 290.9 acres in
1940 to 308.5 acres in 1943.
Greatest increase in number
of farms, 897, or 20.1 percent
was shown by Lane county, but
its farm acreage increased only
0.8 percent. Greatest increase in
farm acreage, 614,817 acres, or
79.5 percent, was shown by
Klamath county, although it lost
86, or 7.8 percent, of the 153s
farms it had in 1940.
John A. Kallak, with head
quarters at Salem, Oregon, was
the area supervisor in charge of
the Oregon enumeration,
Jackson county has 2,991
farms, according to the prelimi
nary figures for J 945. This total
compares with 2,702 farms in
1940. Farm acreage now totals
412,166 compared with 316,394
five years ago.
Josephine county figures were
2288 farms In 1945 and 1944 in
1940; farm acreage, 124,784 and
125,206.

In 1940 Dr. Elliott P. Joslin,
whose textbook on diabetes is
famous, estimated that there

and that the
number was
increasing year
by year be
cause (1) the
entire popula
tion is aging
that is, a larg
er proportion
survive long
enough to get
such diseases

as diabetes, cancer,
etc., than
when the nation or country was
younger (if you take this as an
Hibernlctsm you had better have
your wits sharpened); (2) physi
cians discover more cases; (3)
people are getting more health
conscious that Is, they consult
the physician even before they
are convinced there is no alter
native; and (4) there are more
people in the country.
Old timers may remember
that the eminent diagnosticians,
consultants played it safe, much
as the racketeers in "clinics" do
now by assuring the gullible cus
tomer whose ailment or com
plaint baffled them that it was
not "organic" merely a "func
tional" disturbance, or soothing
language to that effect.
Well, diabetes (diabetes melli
tus, sugar diabetes, the real
thing) is a functional deficiency
or ailment. It begins so insidi
ously in most cases that you nev
er dream you have it - until a
casual urine test reveals glucose
(sugar).
It should be clearly understood
that there is no clear dividing
line between good health and
diabetes.
Perhaps this will become more
comprehensible when you consid
er what constitutes diabetes. As
a bulletin recently, broadcast by
the Medical Society of the State
of New York defines it, diabetes
is a disease of the internal
glands, especially of the pan
creas, in which the ability of the
body to use all the starch and
sugar in food is diminished.
Now every individaul whose
urine contains glucose (sugar)
has diabetes. Some glucose may
be present in the urine of a per
fectly healthy person in some
circumstances. But if the urine
constantly contains sugar it is
reasonable to assume the indi
vidual has diabetes until further
Investigation proves otherwise;
If the urine contains sugar and
the chemical test of the blood
shows more than the normal
amount of glucose (sugar) in the
blood, then It Is diabetes.
The blood of a healthy person
contains a constant 0.10 to 0.14
per cent of sugar (glucose) and if
the level of sugar In the blood
falls to half that level or rises
half again that level, the pa
tient is in grave danger.
In the entire quantity of
blood in the. body (less than a
gallon in a woman, more than
a gallon in a man) there is ap
proximately a teaspoonful of
sugar. If your blood contains
that much sugar everythings
jake. But if for any reason (to
be discussed later) your blood
sugar gets down to only one
third or one-half teaspoonful,
then you are in a bad way.

Enrollment Bulge
Outlook For Fall
University ot Oregon, Eugene,
July 16 A forecast of the en
rollment increases that may be
expected when Oregon's institu
tions Of higher education open
for the regular session this fall
can probably be found in the re
port of increases shown through
out the system on the University
of Oregon campus, shows that an
all-over increase of a.s per ceui
has been made over enrollment
of summer session of 1944, with
2,772 students registered in the
various schools of the state sys
tem. Greatest increase is shown at
Eastern Oregon College of Edu
cation at La Grande where 143
students are registered for an
enrollment increase of 32.4 over
last year. ,
The Southern Oregon College
of Education at Ashland has In
