Washington, July 14 U.PJ
The navy revealed tonight how
the anit-aircraft guns of two de
stroyers the Hugh W. Hadley
and the Evans shot down 38
Japanese planes in an hour and
43 minutes.
This is the largest single-action
bag of Japanese aircraft ever re
corded by ships of the size of the
Bailey and the Evans.
The action took place while
the two destroyers were on pa
trol off Okinawa on the morning
of Hay 11. The U. S. ships were
attacked by more than 150 en
emy planes 88 of which ended
up in the water from the guns of
the destroyers and a supporting
group of marine Corsair pilots.
Both ships were damaged. The
Evans suffered four suicide
crashes on her decks and hull
while the Hadley took hits that
ultimately flooded both engine
rooms, one fire room and put the
main gun battery out of action.
Corsair fighter pilots, though
heavily outnumbered joined the
battle and shot down about 50
Japanese planes while covering
the destroyers. '
The Evans, smaller of the two
vessels, is credited with 15
planes shot down and four "as
sists" in 73 minutes, while the
2200-ton Hadley established an
all time navy record for destroy
ers by bringing down 23 Jap
planes in 105 minutes. In the
last 30 minutes of battle, the
'Hadley protected the crippled
Evans while her crew put out
fires and made repairs that saved
the ship.
The Evans is skippered by
Capt. Robert J. Archer. '
TAKES 3 MONTHS

Numerous Inquiries from land
lords and tenants pertaining to
sales of rental property and pos
session by the purchaser have
been received at the Rent Con
trol office during the past few
weeks, according to Marvin Hix
on, area rent representative,
When a landlord acquires the
property after the effective date
of rent control and the tenant
in occupancy is the tenant of the
vendor, the landlord must file
with the rent office for permis
sion to evict the tenant if he
wishes to occupy the premises
for his own use. In this case, a
three months waiting period is
involved, Hixon explained.
If a landlord acquired the
property after the effective date
of rent control and wishes to
evict his own tenant for his own
occupancy, he rtiust file with the
rent control office for permission
to evict the tenant. In this case,
the three months waiting period
would not be Involved.
Any questions arising per
taining to any phase of rent con
trol should be referred to the
rent control office, city hall, in
Medford, to prevent violations
and enforcement actions, Hixon
added.

Leg Make-Up 1 8
Old, Custom For
. African Police
Chicago, (U.R) The American
girl who thinks leg make-up is
strictly an American invention
will be interested to know that
African tribesmen were the first
leg artists.
Dr. Wilfred H. Hambly, cura
tor of African Ethnology at the
Chicago Museum of Natural His
tory, says tribesmen trained for
police work by the British West
African government completed
their uniforms with leg make
up. "The uniform of the Nigerian
police was a dark blue, with
knee breeches and blue puttees,"
says Dr. Hambly. "But more
often than not, the feet were
bare, but shining through with
an unnatural gleaming black
luster."
No shoes were worn and all
the toes were visible, but at a
distance the effect was that the
policeman was wearing patent
leather shoes polished to a dazz
ling splendor, the curator says.
"The solution to this mystery
came unexpectedly during the
early morning visit to a govern
ment station, where a number of
policemen were preparing for
parade," Dr. Hmblay reports.
"All their feet were up on a
low wooden bench and shoe
polish was being liberally ap
plied to the feet and lower legs.
Then the men vigorously brush
ed until the skin of their feet
and legs had a high polish."
Dr. Hambly observed this cus
tom on an African expedition.

they ask the American ambas

Cause of the shortage is the
failure of the American Federal
Economic administration to re
new export licenses of San Diego
major oil companies, Aguilar
said.
Tourist visitors from San
Diego also have been curtailed,
the tourists having been warned
that motoring to Tijuana now
"is at their own risk," according
to the police chief.
Spokesmen for the oil firms
disclosed that trucks containing
50,000 gallons of gasoline were
waiting near the border in anti

When 30 cases of beer fell off
