THE CAUSE OF APPENDICITIS
It is careless of me, perhaps, I Just as the Streptococcus, the
I rs'
Dr
Brady
but I do not carry a card or a
tag on a cord around my waist
to proieci my
self from an
emergency op
eration in case
I am found
unco nscious,
that is, more
so than ordi
narily. I am
confident any
doctor viewing
my case will
r e c o gnlze at
once that I
have already
had my appendix removed or
else a Caesarian section removed
or an encounter with an angry
bull
Before we get serious about
appendicitis, folks, it seems only
fair that I state my opinion con
cerning its management, and
then you can do as you wish
about it if or when it happens
to you.
I believe there is only one
treatment for acute appendicitis,
and that is immediate operation.
The direct cause of acute ap
pendicitis is of course infection.
The notorious Streptococcus is
found in the more serious or
more dangerous cases, but the
ordinary harmless Bacillus coll
(colon bacillus), a normal inhab
itant of the intestine and probab
ly concerned in good digestion,
undergoes some change in char
acter in the unnatural environ
ment of our ultrarefined, namby
pamby "civilized" diet, acquir
ing pathogenic (disease pro
ducing) properties and causing
nearly three-fourths of all cases
of acute appendicitis.. Then still
a third bacterial strain, called
Straphylococcus, Is generally im
plicated especially in pus cases.
Even the Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde
colon bacillus Invades the tis
sues, the wall of the appendix
(not just the lumen or passage
way) through the blood stream.
Staphylococcus or the Pnoumoc-
occus does.
In a good many cases the his
tory of the attack of acute ap
pendicitis is suggestive first
the young person has one or
more attacks of acute tonsillitis
or perhaps quinsy (abscess
around tonsil) or even an attack
of rheumatic fever or just vague
"sore throat' or acute sinus trou
ble, and presently develops
acute appendicitis. The Pneumo
coccus, Streptococcus, Staphylo
coccus, or combinations thereof,
get a foothold in the nose or
throat, or sometimes in a silent
(painless) abscess in gum or
about the roots of a neglected
decayed tooth, and then a vigor
ous young colony of the germs
from this focus travel through
the blood stream and lodge in
the appendix. I hate to talk like
this but after all we can't have
safety if we refuse to recognize
danger. The truth is that acute
appendicitis is one of the haz
ards that may complicate or fol
low the crl (you know, kree, any
acute respiratory infection in
the early hours or days of the
illness before you or the doctor
can tell just what Is coming on).

If the corner grocer is looking
more harried than- usual of late,
it's safe to assume that a short
age of soap, latest item on the
list of wartime unobtainables. is
to blame.
In virtually every city in the

soaps and the better-known bar
soaps have virtually disappeared
from the shelves, a United Press
survey disclosed today. Less
popular brands, however, usual

R e t a 1 1 e rs. wholesalers and
manufacturers not to mention
frenzied housewives agreed
there was a shortage. Many felt
that decreased production be
cause of a scarcity of fats and

Others said rumors of rationing
actually had created the short

In Chicago, one manufacturer
blamed cuts of raw materials al-

Another cited the diversion. of
normal civilian supplies to mill,
