to state police that his place of
business had been entered dur
ing the night and money taken
from the cash register and music
machine. Police are Investigat

On Furlough Pfc. Alvin L.
McQulgg Is spending a 15-day
furlough In Medford with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grover
McQuigg on Ross Lane. McQulgg
is with the Marana army air
field, basic pilot school, at Tuc
son, Ariz., and has been working
in the base statistical office.
Leave Saturday Mr. and
Mrs. R. L. Lewis and daughter,
Gertrude, 812 Catherine street,
plan to leave Saturday for Red
mond, Ore., for a week s visit
with their son, Dr. R. L. Lewis.
The Lewis' other son, First Sgt.
Dick Levis,' Ft. Lewis, Wash.,
will join the family and return
with them to complete a two
weeks furlough.

received here of the recent birth
of a five pound girl to Dr. and
Mrs. John T. Brunn, Jr., at Salt
Lake City, Utah. Mrs. Brunn is
the former Peggy Gardner,
daughter of the Very Rev. Fath
er Herald G. Gardner, dean of
St. Mark's Cathedral in Salt
Lake City, and Mrs. Gardner.

Martin Home Henry Martin,
oim-c, arrived here yesterday
on a 30-day navy leave following
overseas service in the Pacific,
and is visiting his wife and son
at the family home, 805 Pine
street. Martin. In th nam, .inn.
1839, has a total of five years
overseas duty to his credit and
last saw action near Okinawa.
He has participated In 17 differ
ent engagements and wears the
ribbon of the letter of commen
dation, received for the battle of
Coral Sea, the navy good con
duct ribbon, the Philippine liber
ation ribbon with two bronze
battle stars, and the pre-Pearl
Harbor ribbon for duty afloat.
Martin served on a CVE ship.

and Wednesday at the Medford
defense rental office at OPA
headquarters In the city hall, on
official business.

originally scheduled for tonight,
has been postponed until July 19
when the group will meet at the
home of Mrs. E. D. Scripter, 80
Rose avenue. A pot-luck picnic
supper will be served at 6:30
p.m. to members and their hus

Frederick Foster, son of Mr. and
Mrs. C. W. Foster, 115 Clark
street, . returned to the family
home this week after three years
and nine months service with
the army air corps. He received
an honorable discharge from the
corps at Ft. Lewis, Wash. A
technical sergeant, Foster served
18 months with the 13th air
force in the Pacific and was
awarded the air medal with two
oak leaf clusters. He was em
ployed by Copco before entering
the service and plans to enter
school next fall.

EDWARD WARD .
Funeral services for Edward
George Ward, 11 year old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ward of 847
West Second street, who passed
away in a Portland hospital
Tuesday, will be held in the
Conger-Morris chapel at 1:30
p.m. Monday with the Rev. Wol
ford A. Dawes officiating. Inter
ment will be in Siskiyou Memor
ial Park.
Edward leaves besides his
parents, one brother, James
Ward. Also his grandmother,
Mrs. Thomas Williams of Cot
tage Grove, Oregon and several
aunts and uncles.
DEATH SUMMONS
S. VILAS BECKWITH
Word was received from Pas
adena, Calif., today of the death
of S. Vilas Beckwlth In that city
early this morning. Mr. Beck
with came to Medford in 1910
from Englewood, N. J., one of
the leaders In what has been
called the "great red-apple he-
gira, bought a fruit ranch In
the Central Point district and
lived for several years near Med
ford on King's highway.
Active in civic and social af
fairs, Mr. Beckwith was one of
the charter members and organ
izers of the Rogue Valley Uni
versity club and Its first presi
dent. He was also manager of
the Rogue River Fruit -and Pro
duce association and as such di
rected the construction of Med-
ford's first cold storage plant on
North Central avenue. He left
here with his family at the close
of World War I, for Seattle
where he was manager of the
Pacific Net and Twine company
until the death of Mrs. Beckwith
and his retirement In 1940.
Deceased was born in Platts
burg, N. Y., in 1875. He leaves
two sons, S. Vilas Jr., of San
Rafael, Calif., Bralnerd Beck
with of Pasadena, and three
grandchildren.

GEORGE J. BISHOP
George J. Bishop, 72, a resi
dent of Medford for 37 years,
passed away at his home, 411
Beatty street, Wednesday after
a prolonged illness.
He was born at Burnettsvllle,
Ind., Jan. 22, 1873 and was mar
ried In that state to Mary Lulu
Wilson who survives. They cele
brated their golden wedding an
niversary last Feb. 14.
Until ill health prevented, Mr.
Bishop was an ardent member of
the local Odd Fellows lodge. Be
sides his wife, he leaves four
sons, R. W. Bishop, Stockton,
Calif.; H. C. Bishop, Medford;
C. F., Ashland, and R. H., Oak
land, Calif. Also two sisters,
Mrs. Margaret Newhouse and
Mrs. Laura Wagner of Indiana.
Also nine grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be con
ducted by A. J. Hanby in the
Conger-Morris chapel at 10:30
a.m. Saturday. Services at the
grave In I.O.. cemetery will be
under auspices of the local Odd
Fellows lodge.
