Your Health and It's Care

though J know,
from the grate
ful letters I
have received
from many of
his p a 1 1 ents,
Dr. Brady that he is high
ly successful In the ambulant
(injection) treatment of hernia.
I had taken the doctor to task
(and I'm sorry now) because one
of my readers whom I had ad
vised to consult the doctor for
such treatment, complained that
the doctor refused to treat him
although, according to the read
er, the doctor thought the treat
ment would give satisfactory re
sults. I was reluctant to believe It,
but there can be no question
now, that a .good many people,
particularly those who ask for
the names of three or four doc
tors who are skilled in this or
that method, are primarily inter
ested in finding what they con
sider a bargain that is, they
care little what method a doctor
may use, as long as his treatment
costs less than they know an op
eration will cost.
That was the situation about
which I chided the doctor in the
instance mentioned. The patient
sought to pay a nominal fee for
each office visit to take treat
ment on suspicion, as it were
and argued that he could go to
the hospital (as a charity patient,
of course) and have an operation
for less than the doctor charged
for the entire treatment. So the
doctor properly refused to treat
him. , ;
In a similar Instance some
time ago a reader vehemently
charged that a physician I had
recommended as skilled In the
modern treatment of Infected
tonsils was a quack who de
served expulsion from the medi
cal profession, etc. I happened to
know this physician, have long
regarded him as the Ideal phy
sician and on several occasions
have been fortunate enough to
obtain his professional service
for members of my own family.
So I nailed him and learned, as I
might have anticipated, that the
reader demanded a guarantee
that the treatment would cure
him or give satisfactory results.
Of course no honest physician,
specialist or surgeon can or does
guarantee anything In any cir
cumstance. If a doctor guaran
tees cure or satisfactory results
or pretends to do so, you may be
sure he is a quack and a danger
ous one to have any truck with.
By any reasonable, informed

comparison, I can state that the
prospect of cure is at least as
good when hernia is treated by
the ambulant method (injections)
as it is when hernia is treated by
radical operation (hospitaliza
tion). And of course- the ambu
lant (injections) method is safer
than the major operation so far
as life is concerned.
In regard to the treatment of
infected tonsils, this is my belief
and opinion: if I had Infected
tonsils I'd choose the diathermy
(electro - coagulation) treatment,
In my opinion this method is
safer so far as life is concerned,
and, in the hands of a skilled
physician, it is as adequate in all
respects as the major operation.
