MUCH DECORATED
MEDFORD SOLDIER
GIVEN DISCHARGE
Fort Lewis, Wash. Wearing
the nation's- econd highest
award, the distinguished service
cross, First Lieutenant Max Hen
don, Medford, Ore., is also hold-
er of the silver star with two
oak-leaf clusters, Croix de
Guerre with bronze palm and
the Italian bronze medal. After
six years of meritorious service,
the soldier who received a battle
commission through his heroic
deeds was honorably discharged
from the army.
The 26-year-old 3rd division
infantry officer participated in
the seven major campaigns of the
European theatre of operations
and fought his way from the
shores of Africa to the heart of
Germany. Everywhere Hcndon
met the enemy his intrepidity
was clearly and unquestionably
displayed.
Hendon, who was a first. ser
geant at the time, repulsed eight
enemy counter attacks at Lungo,
Italy, and when the smoke of
battle cleared there were only
20 men left on a hill that the
day before held 117. For extra
ordinary heroism against an
armed enemy the sergeant re
ceived the coveted distinguished
service cross. Repulsing an at
tack in Sicily and one at Anzio
earned the former high school
graduate the silver star and one
oak-leaf cluster. Another cluster
was added when he brought 42
of his men, who had been cut off
from allied lines for two days,
back to safety in the battle of
Northern France.
Lt. Hendon who says he has
aged 20 years In the last six was
honorably separated from the

SHIPMENT IDE
TO
New York (U.R) A six-ton
shipment of protein hydrolysates
has been sent to save the lives of
some 2,000 Netherlanders, so
starved by five years of Nazi oc
cupation that they are beyond
the aid of ordinary food, Ameri
can Relief for Holland, Inc., has
announced.
A chemical derived from a va
riety of protein and other food
ingredients, the hydrolysates are
especially designed for the treat
ment of advanced stages of star
vation. Their life-saving proper
ties have been compared with
those of the sulfa drugs and peni
cillin.
Without them, some 4,500,000
Hollanders, who have exhausted
their bodies protein reserve and
thus lost both their ability to di
gest food and their resistance to
Infection, would surely die, the
organization said. This and fu
ture shipments of the relief
agency are expected to provide
treatment for most of them by
early summer.
The protein hydrolysates are
manufactured with various com
binations and ingredients, in
cluding dried skim milk, yeast,
beef, pork pancreas and gluten.
The mixture is digested by the
action of enzymes, pepsin and
trypsin during the manufactur
ing process, then refined and
concentrated. Its final form may
be either liquid or a dehydrated
powder.
Forms are available for oral
administration or injection, the
organization said. A self-admin-isterable
powder form was se
lected for Holland to save ship
ping space and to lessen strain
on inadequate medical facilities.

V Use water on your lawn or your garden wisely. Don't water-log
