IS REQUESTED BY
CHICAGO WRITER
Chicago, July 6. OI.R) The
Daily News today asked Sen. A.
B. (Happy) Chandler, commis
sioner of baseball, to investigate
the "Lou Novikoff deal" by
which the Chicago Cubs keep
the "mad Russian" exiled with
their Los Angeles farm club at a
time when the White Sox are
offering $15,000 for him.
The paper printed under a
three column head on its sport
page a letter written by its vet
eran baseball writer, Jack Ryan,
and addrescpri n thn Kanfui-kv
senator in Washington. The let
ter asicea:
"Some people, commissioner,
wonder if this is thn wnv vmi
want baseball to trample on a
piayer s jod prospects and earn
ing power?"
The White Sox are ready to
pay $15,000 or more for Novi
koff, former Cub outfielder, the
News said.
Mrs. Grace Comiskey, owner,
and Manager Jim Dykes of the
Sox wired their offer to the Los
Angeles club, controlled by
Owner P. K. Wrigley and Gen
eral Manager James Gallagher
of the Cubs. They were flatly re
fused, the paper said.
"There was some sleight-of-hand
work, of course, in dump
ing Novikoff into the minors"
for the third time, the News said.
